I'll have my period during surgery -- what do I do?! - Women's Health ...

Here's the deal: I'm scheduled for surgery next month, 12/10, and I am expecting my period -- as long as I'm on time, which I almost always am -- to start on 12/8. Will this be a problem?

It's only day surgery for an anterior ankle impingement. I've had two operations with this surgeon before, and his surgeries are very quick. This is an arthroscopic procedure, expected to last about an hour. If the post-op ordeal is the same as the last couple of times (and I don't see why it wouldn't be), I'll be up and moving around immediately after surgery.

Will having my period be a problem? I've had 8 prior surgeries and I've never had to deal with my period during one, so I don't really know what to do. I didn't want to ask the surgical scheduler because he was a guy and I figured he wouldn't know what to say; my surgeon is also a male, so that's a little embarrassing to ask.

I cannot postpone my surgery. I was originally scheduled for Christmas Eve, but thankfully that was pushed up to the 10th. It will take me at least 6 months to fully heal, and I'm going to graduate school for speech therapy starting in the summer, so this surgery needs to happen asap. Will having my period be okay?
