Apple, Philippe Starck To Reveal ?Revolutionary? Project Prior To Christmas

philippe-stark-apple$10 says it's an iPhone 5 case. AFP is reporting Philippe Stark and Apple have teamed up on a project that Starck called "fairly, if not very, revolutionary." The project is said to drop in time for Christmas. However that's where the fun info stops. No other details were given including the nature or scope of this so-called revolutionary project. It could anything from a new consumer product to a "revolutionary" design element of the new Apple HQ. And for what it's worth, Apple already has their own powerhouse designer in Sir Jonathan Ive.

Portuguese opposition party wants 'terabyte tax,' voters want a new opposition party

Image
Portugal's opposition party, Partido Socialista, is pondering a tax on storage media under the flag of copyright protection. Under the proposal, consumers would pay €0.2 for every gigabyte of storage purchased, so a 1TB HDD would cost around €21 ($28) extra, plus an additional levy on devices over that size means a 2TB drive could cost an additional €103.2 ($135). It doesn't just stop at desktop platters: USB sticks, memory cards and even smartphones would also be charged, with any device packing 64GB of storage facing a surcharge of €32 ($42). A party member defended the idea, saying that the tax is aimed at professionals who use larger capacity drives -- but since most consumer HDDs come with a minimum size of 160GB and the legislation is also supposedly meant to tackle piracy, we're not entirely sure it adds up -- except maybe in government coffers.

Update: We're hearing that the bill titled PL118 has been withdrawn in the face of overwhelming common sense.

[Thanks, Ricardo]

Prosecutors: Zimmerman profiled Trayvon Martin

George Zimmerman, center, stands with a Seminole County deputy and his attorney Mark O'Mara during a court hearing??

[ EDITOR'S NOTE: This story will be updated throughout the day. Refresh this page for updates. ]

UPDATE, 3:45 p.m. ET: The affadavit filed Wednesday by prosecutors to establish probable cause of second-degree murder in the Trayvon Martin case has been released by the court. In it, prosecutors claim that George Zimmerman profiled Martin on Feb. 26, and during his call to the police dispatcher "made reference to people he felt had committed and gotten away with break-ins in his neighborhood."

More from the four-page court filing:

Later while talking about Martin, Zimmerman stated "these ---holes, they always get away" and also said "these ----ing punks."

During this time, Martin was on the phone with a friend and described to her what was happening. The witness advised that Martin was scared because he was being followed through the complex by and unknown male and didn't know why. Martin attempted to run home but was followed by Zimmerman who didn't want the person he falsely assumed was going to commit a crime to get away before the police arrived. Zimmerman got out of his vehicle and followed Martin. When the police dispatcher realized Zimmerman was pursuing Martin, he instructed Zimmerman not to do that and that the responding officer would meet him. Zimmerman disregarded the police dispatcher and continued to follow Martin.

Zimmerman confronted Martin and a struggle ensued. Witnesses heard people arguing and what sounded like a struggle. During this time period witnesses heard numerous calls for help and some of these were recorded in 911 calls to police. Trayvon Martin's mother has reviewed the 911 calls and has identified the voice crying for help as Trayvon Martin's voice.

Zimmerman shot Martin in the chest. When police arrived Zimmerman admitted shooting Martin. Officers recovered a gun from a holster inside Zimmerman's waistband. A fired casing that was recovered at the scene was determined to have been fired from the firearm.

Assistant Medical Examiner Dr. Bao performed an autopsy and determined that Martin died from the gunshot wound.

1:40 p.m. ET: Trayvon Martin shooter George Zimmerman appeared in a Florida courtroom shortly after 1:30 p.m. He entered the courtroom in handcuffs.

Flanked by a police officer and his lawyer, Mark O'Mara, Zimmerman acknowledged the second-degree murder charge against him. He spoke only briefly, saying "Yes, sir" twice, and did not enter a plea.

The judge agreed there was probable cause to proceed, and set for a formal arraignment on May 29, at 1:30 p.m. ET. O'Mara said Zimmerman would plead not guilty.

Zimmerman is being held in protective custody without bail in Seminole County Jail. O'Mara did not ask the judge to set a bond, but asked for the case file to be sealed. The prosecutors agreed to the request.

1:20 p.m. ET: Trayvon Martin's mother Sybrina Fulton, who said on the "Today" show early Thursday that she believed Zimmerman's fatal shooting of her son was an "accident," has retracted those comments.

"George Zimmerman stalked my son and murdered him in cold blood," told MSNBC in a separate interview.

"I believe it was an accident," Fulton told Ann Curry in the initial interview. "I believe that it just got out of control and he couldn't turn the clock back."

1:10 p.m. ET: George Zimmerman is due in court at 1:30 p.m ET. Watch the video below.

12:43 p.m. ET: Is George Zimmerman safer in jail or out? That's the question the judge overseeing the second-degree murder charge against him will consider at his arraignment later today, when Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, plans to ask the judge to release his client on bond.

"You could make an argument that he would be safer to remain in custody," Charles Rose, director of the center for excellence and advocacy at the Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, Fla., told CNN.

"I think nobody would deny the fact if George Zimmerman is walking down the street today, he would be at risk," O'Mara, said Wednesday.

But the judge may opt to release Zimmerman because of the "nightmare" it would be to guarantee his safety in jail, Rose said.

And while lawyers for Trayvon Martin's family contend Zimmerman is a "flight risk," Rose said that given the intense media coverage of the case, Zimmerman's face is too recognizable for him to be able to flee.

"I would not be surprised to see him walk in the door and walk out the door," Rose said.

12:20 p.m. ET: According to the Orlando Sentinel, George Zimmerman "can ask to have the second-degree-murder charge against him dropped without having to stand trial in the death of Trayvon Martin."

The paper reports that in 2010, the Florida Supreme Court "ruled that anyone claiming 'stand your ground' immunity in a death, battery or assault case can request a hearing on the evidence."

However, there is no indication Zimmerman will do so. His attorney, Mark O'Mara, said Zimmerman will plead "not guilty" at his arraignment later today.

11:00 a.m. ET: George Zimmerman's attorney Mark O'Mara said he's concerned about his client's safety, but would like the judge to grant bail because he needs Zimmerman's assistance in building a case outside of jail.

"I would like to get him out," O'Mara said in an interview with Soledad O'Brien on CNN. "I need him out to assist me in going over all the evidence and preparing our defense. I'm concerned about his safety to a certain extent, but I'm truly hoping that there will be a receding of the frustrations or anger now that the process is moving forward. ... There are certainly still some animosities and some high emotions around the case."

O'Mara also dismissed the assertion by Zimmerman's former legal team that his client is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder: "A diagnosis like that should be made by a professional psychologist or psychiatrist.? I'm not going to make a diagnosis like that. He is stressed. He's tired. He's been through a lot with the way this case has been handled. I'm just hoping that his mental health stays well and that we can move forward with getting the case figured out."

8:36 a.m. ET: George Zimmerman is expected to be arraigned Thursday on the second-degree murder charge in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

According to his attorney, Mark O'Mara, Zimmerman will plead not guilty. O'Mara said he will ask the judge to set a bond for his client, who is being held in protective custody without bail in Seminole County Jail.

Martin's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, spoke out early Thursday saying they just want justice for their son.

"I believe it was an accident," Fulton said on the "Today" show. "I believe that it just got out of control, and he [Zimmerman] couldn't turn the clock back."

"We just want him [Zimmerman] to be held accountable for what he's done," Fulton said. "And by him not being arrested, that would not have been done. So we are happy that he was arrested so that the committee gives his side of the story."

Zimmerman, the 28-year-old neighborhood watchman who shot and killed Martin on Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla., told police he was acting in self-defense, and that Martin attacked him.

The criminal charge was announced on Wednesday by Angela Corey, the special prosecutor in the case.

"Three weeks ago our prosecution team promised [Martin's] sweet parents we would get answers to all of their questions, no matter where our quest for the truth led us," Corey said at a news conference in Jacksonville. "And it is that search for justice for Trayvon that has brought us to this night."

Syria mostly calm after UN truce deadline

BEIRUT (AP) ? A fragile cease-fire brokered by the U.N. took hold in Syria on Thursday with regime forces apparently halting widespread attacks on the opposition, but there were reports of scattered violence and the government defied demands by international envoy Kofi Annan to pull troops back to barracks.

A civilian and a Syrian soldier were reported killed after the 6 a.m. cease-fire deadline, but there was no sign of the normally intense shelling, rocket attacks and sniper fire that have become routine.

If the truce holds, it would be the first time the regime has observed an internationally brokered cease-fire since Bashar Assad's regime launched a brutal crackdown 13 months ago on mass protests calling for his ouster.

However, troops intensified searches at checkpoints, tightening controls ahead of possible large-scale protests Friday called by the opposition and meant to test the regime's commitment to the Annan plan.

There was deep skepticism that the regime would halt its fire for long, given that Assad has broken promises in the past. Also, the regime said Wednesday, on the eve of the truce deadline, that it reserves the right to respond to any aggression, potentially a pretext for breaking the truce.

Annan's plan calls for the deployment of international observers and talks on a political transition once a truce is in place. The initiative has broad international support, including from Assad allies Russia, China and Iran, and is widely seen as the last chance for diplomacy to end the violence. The increasingly militarized uprising has been veering toward an armed insurgency.

Analysts said the apparent halt in government attacks suggests Assad's allies are pressuring him for the first time, after shielding him from international condemnation in the past. Annan has visited Russia, Iran and China to get the broadest possible backing for the plan.

The West and its allies doubt the sincerity of the regime's pledges to comply with the truce plan, which calls on the Syrian government to allow peaceful protests. A prolonged cease-fire could threaten the regime by encouraging large numbers of protesters to flood the streets, as they did at the start of the revolt against the four-decade rule of the Assad clan. The government met those demonstrations with a harsh crackdown, and more than 9,000 people have died since, according to the U.N.

Bassma Kodmani, spokeswoman of the opposition Syrian National Council, said the truce has largely been observed since 6 a.m. Thursday, but that a heavy security presence, including checkpoints and snipers remain.

"There is no evidence of any significant withdrawal," she told reporters in Geneva. "The real test for us today is if people can go and demonstrate peacefully" she added. "This is the real reality check."

The group's leader, Burhan Ghalioun, urged Syrians to demonstrate peacefully on Friday, the day of weekly protests since the uprising began. "Tomorrow, like every Friday, the Syrian people are called to demonstrate even more and put the regime in front of its responsibilities ? put the international community in front of its responsibilities," he said.

Annan is to brief the U.N. Security Council by video conference from Geneva on Thursday afternoon.

Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, said a roadside bomb exploded near a bus carrying soldiers in the northern city of Aleppo, killing one officer.

And the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group, said a man was shot dead in the central town of Safsafiyeh in Hama province. The group gave no further details, but Mousab Hamadee, an area activist, said troops shot and killed the man who was apparently wanted by the authorities and tried to flee a checkpoint where he was stopped.

Troops opened also fire in several areas in the northern province of Idlib, but there were no reports of casualties, said activist Fadi al-Yassin. Al-Yassin said troops were taking strict measures at checkpoints, asking people to leave the car and then searching them thoroughly. He said lines of cars are stretching for hundreds of meters (yards) at checkpoints.

A grassroots opposition group, the Local Coordination Committees, said regime forces carried out arrests in the Damascus suburb of Maadamiyah shortly after reinforcements entered the area. It also reported anti-regime protests at universities in the southern city of Daraa and the eastern city of Deir el-Zour, and a protest march in the northern village of Tamanaa.

On Tuesday, the regime had ignored a deadline for withdrawing troops from population centers, prompting renewed demands by Annan that forces return to their barracks. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also demanded Thursday that the Syrian troops withdraw, saying that "keeping the cities under pressure is not meaningful."

However, Assad apparently is unwilling to ease control over opposition areas for fear of widespread anti-government protests.

A major test could come on Friday. Since the outbreak of the protests in March 2011, thousands have taken to the streets every week after Friday noon prayers in the mosques.

The military crackdown over the past year succeeded in preventing protesters from recreating the fervor of Egypt's Tahrir Square, where hundreds of thousands of people camped out in a powerful show of dissent that drove longtime leader Hosni Mubarak from power.

The government denies that it is facing a popular uprising, claiming instead that terrorists are carrying out a foreign conspiracy to destroy Syria. In pledging Wednesday to observe the cease-fire, the government set a major condition, saying troops reserve the right to defend themselves if attacked.

Syrian troops have been on a major offensive since late January when they attacked rebel-held areas around the capital Damascus. During the first week of February, Assad's forces began a major campaign to retake the Baba Amr neighborhood in the city of Homs that fell in the hands of the regime in early March.

Since then, Assad's forces have been retaking major rebel-held areas including the city of Idlib as well as many towns around the country. Troops also now control much of the areas that border Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq making it more difficult for refugees to leave the country. Despite the regime gains, rebels still held some areas, including spots in the province of Homs, Hama, Daraa.

The White House cautioned Wednesday that the Assad regime has reneged on promises to stop the violence in the past.

"What is important to remember is that we judge the Assad's regime by its actions and not by their promises, because their promises have proven so frequently in the past to be empty," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters in Washington.

Western powers have pinned their hopes on Annan's plan, in part because they are running out of options. The U.N. has ruled out any military intervention of the type that helped bring down Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, and several rounds of sanctions and other attempts to isolate Assad have done little to stop the bloodshed.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar have called for arming the rebels, but even if they follow through there is no guarantee that such efforts could cripple Assad's well-armed regime.

In other developments, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey could seek NATO's help in case the Syrian troops violate its borders again. Syrian forces opened fire across the Turkish border on Monday, killing two people in a Turkish refugee camp.

Patsy Montgomery ? The Full Moxie:: Celebrity, Entertainment, DIY ...

If you?re involved in women?s issues in the Central Valley, chances are you may have crossed paths a time or two with the effervescent Patsy Montgomery.

Patsy is the face and voice of?Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, proudly advocating for reproductive freedom for men and women alike. She is a mother, a grandmother, a cancer survivor, a businesswoman, an activist and an all-around amazing individual. Clever and?intelligent, witty and dynamic ? Patsy is moxie.

Without further ado, we give you our Woman of the Week: Patsy Montgomery.

What inspired you to work with Planned Parenthood and for women?s?reproductive rights?

I had spent most of the 1980s working as a Children?s Advocate with the?local Rape Counseling Center. After being a stay-at-home mom for a?couple of years, I learned that Planned Parenthood was hiring a part-time?educator. I was impressed with their mission and focus on preventive?health care. I have worked here for more than 21 years and now do public?policy work to protect access to health care for women and their families. It is estimated that 1 in 5 women nationally and 1 in 4?throughout California depend on Planned Parenthood for their only access to health care. When people learn where I work, women usually say ?Thank you ? Planned Parenthood was there for me when I lost my health insurance and needed birth control ?? or ?Planned Parenthood saved my life by discovering my breast lump ?? They always appreciate that we?re here, no matter what.

Where do you find inspiration in general?

Marianne Williamson has a book titled Illuminata, A Return to Prayer that I use to center myself for the day ahead. In 2004 I came close to dying from chemotherapy treatments for stage 3 colon cancer. The prayers help me to focus on the positive no matter what challenges I face. My?other inspiration is my mentor, the iconic Dolores Huerta. She is 82-years old, mother to 11 children, and continues to fight for equality and against injustices wherever they present themselves.

You clearly have moxie. Where does that come from?

Having strong women in my life and a husband who never held me back, even when we disagreed. I have always been encouraged to speak up for what I think is the right thing, even when people I love and care about disagree with me. My late husband was a moderate Republican and I became?a Democrat in 1990 and found my feminist voice. Our three children grew up hearing lively and passionate debates about issues, learning you can respectfully disagree, but if you want to change the status quo, you have to organize and vote.

What?s the best part of your day?

Waking up ? seriously, when you have come as close to dying as I did in 2004 you learn to appreciate the gift of each and every day. To top it off I get to walk to my office, wave hello to my neighbors, work for Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, and actively do something positive to protect and expand access to health care in California and around the country.

Some have likened this presidential campaign season a ?War on Women.? Do you agree?

Absolutely. When Congress took an extreme, hard right turn attacking both Planned Parenthood and birth control as a preventive health measure while protecting access to Viagra, it really awakened women, especially young women, to the importance of paying attention to who is running for office and their position on issues. I?m amazed that in 2012 we are having to fight to protect equal access to birth control, breast health services and pap smears. Voting age women make up approximately 53% of the United States and they are becoming more informed every day about what is at stake and how their vote will impact their future and that of their family.

How do you unwind from a tough day at work?

Going for a walk in the Tower District with my daughter Sarah, infant grandson Arda, and rescue dog Murphy Pedro Montgomery. We share a home and the joy of seeing my grandson every day is a blessing that I fully appreciate.

Which would you rather have right now: Chocolate or a cocktail?

Green & Black?s organic dark chocolate ? hands down.

Feds: Soldiers took 'live' anti-tank weapon home

An anti-tank weapon, capable of penetrating 12 inches of armor, was smuggled off of a military base in Washington state. Chris Daniels reports.

By Jeff Black, msnbc.com

Five soldiers are under investigation for taking an Army anti-tank weapon loaded with a live rocket home from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state and passing it around, a federal law enforcement spokeswoman confirmed to msnbc.com.

NBC station King-TV in Seattle was first to reveal?the probe. The station?reported that one of the soldiers smuggled the M-72 LAW (light anti-tank weapon)? --?a shoulder-fired launcher armed with a rocket capable of penetrating armor nearly one-foot thick --?off the sprawling base southeast of Seattle. The weapon was then held in the possession of at least five soldiers.

?It was indeed a live rocket,? Cheryl Bishop, spokeswoman for the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), told msnbc.com on Wednesday.

According to KING-TV, this is how the weapon was discovered:

The soldiers' secret reportedly became revealed when one of the troops was deployed to Afghanistan last year. His girlfriend called police when she found the rocket launcher in their closet.

The weapon was turned over to federal agents by the Pierce County Sheriff?s office, Bishop said.

?There is nothing that we know about to date that there was any intention for it?to be used," Bishop said. ?They did have it ? it was an active and live military LAWs rocket.?

Investigators told King-TV they expect that charges for illegally possessing a military-grade weapon will be filed by federal prosecutors against the soldiers.

The Army has assisted in the investigation, Bishop said. It was unclear if any disciplinary action within the military has taken place against the soldiers.

An Army spokesman at?the base?told King-TV he wasn?t aware of the investigation.

Norway mass killer deemed sane in new finding

OSLO (Reuters) - Norwegian Anders Behring Breivik was sane when he killed 77 people last summer in attacks he saw as punishing pro-immigration "traitors", a psychiatric team said on Tuesday, contradicting a prior report that found him psychotic.

Breivik has insisted he is mentally stable and demanded that his attacks - the most violent in Norway since World War Two - be judged as political rather than the work of a deranged mind.

His trial on terror and murder charges is scheduled to start in Oslo next week and last 10 weeks. The new report could give judges grounds to sentence Breivik to prison.

Breivik, 33, has admitted detonating a bomb that killed eight people at government headquarters in Oslo on July 22, then massacring 69 people with gunfire at a Labour Party summer camp. Most of the summer camp victims were teenagers.

"We're talking about psychosis, and we have found no evidence of it," psychiatrist Asgar Aspaas told reporters after submitting the 310-page report based on weeks of round-the-clock observation.

Aspaas was one of two experts appointed to provide a second opinion after a previous team using different methods found Breivik to be a psychotic who also suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. The initial finding caused a public uproar.

"It's a completely open question now," said Jo Martin Stigen, a University of Oslo law professor. "I don't think we can rule out that he will be considered legally sane in the end."

The dueling psychiatric teams are expected to defend their diagnoses in court, an unusual event in Norway. The final ruling will be made by a five-judge panel as part of its verdict at the end of the trial.

Breivik's attorney, Geir Lippestad, has said he would call political experts and historians to testify that Breivik's world view is shared by others. He would also call a radical Islamist cleric who holds a similar view that European and Islamic culture are irreconcilable.

If he is found guilty and the judges side with the latest psychiatric report, Breivik could face 21 years in prison with the potential for unlimited extensions to prevent him from repeating his crimes.

If Breivik is ruled psychotic he could face an indefinite period of psychiatric care in a locked facility.

District Judge Ina Stroemstad, who is not on the case, said the trial judges would now have to sort a tangle of evidence about Brevik's mental state, including his behavior in court.

"There is a broad picture now, with elements that do not go in the same direction, and that might make their conclusion more difficult," Stroemstad said.

At a preliminary hearing Breivik denied criminal guilt and suggested his actions were part of a war to save European culture.

"I am a military commander in the Norwegian resistance movement and Knights Templar Norway," Breivik said, echoing a written manifesto in which he called himself "a hero of Europe, a savior of our people and of European Christendom."

The new psychiatric report was not made public except for its main conclusions, while key parts of the prior evaluation made their way onto media websites.

"The background for the killings are his paranoid psychotic delusions that he is a participant in a civil war where he is responsible for deciding who lives and dies," the first report said. "His mission is to save the entire western world's culture and genes."

In a letter last week to news media, Breivik called the initial finding of psychosis a "humiliation" and said the experts seemed too traumatized by the killings to be objective.

The per capita income and per capita welfare of the region of residence are protective factors against diseases

People with a high socioeconomic level have been demonstrated to have better health than the rest of people. Other protective factors against chronic diseases are having higher education, having a job, and the per capita income and welfare in the region of residence.

These are some of the conclusions drawn in a pioneer study conducted at the University of Granada by Kristina Karlsdotter, at the Department of Applied Economics, and supervised by professors Jos Jess Martn Martn and Mara del Puerto Lpez del Amo Gonzlez. The study also reveals the potential long-term effects that socioeconomic inequalities have on the health of the population at regional level, and the relevance of family when it comes to assess how social inequalities affect population's health.

To carry out this study, the researchers used data from two surveys conducted in Spain: the 2007 Survey on Living Conditions, performed by the Spanish National Statistics Institute, and the 2001 Longitudinal Database of the Andalusian Population conducted by the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia and the Spanish National Research Council.

The Higher the Income, the Better the Health

University of Granada researchers have found that the individual income of a person "is positively associated with a good health status". Additionally, education level is statistically associated with health status: the higher the education level, the better the health of the individual according to several health variables: perceived health status the perception that an individual has on his/her own health status presence of chronic diseases, and the risk of been granted a temporary/permanent disability pension.

This study reveals the influence of family environment on an individual's health status. Thus, over 30% of variations in an individual's health status are caused by their family environment.

Social relationships are another protective factor against disease, but only in women.

Design of Policies

The authors of this study affirm that the results obtained "are relevant for the design of policies aimed at reducing health inequalities in Spain. The association between health status and the geographical (Autonomous Community, province, city, district) and family environment is very innovative, as well as the association between health status and income and social inequalities. "

This is a pioneer comparative study in Spain on the relationship between individual income, income inequalities, regional and social factors, and health status in people in Spain. This is also the first study to examine how the social environment affects an individual's health status. Finally, this is the first study to analyze the distribution of temporary/permanent disability pensions according to socioeconomic and geographic factors.

Best new-car values for 2012

AFP/Getty Images

The all-electric Nissan Leaf has a range of 100 miles per charge and a top speed of 90 mph.

By Jim Gorzelany, Forbes.com

Volkswagen of America delivers the most value-packed new-vehicle product line among all automakers for 2012, followed closely in overall marks by Hyundai Motor America and Ford Motor Company, according to the results of a study?by the research company Strategic Vision.

While as in recent model years the two top-rated carmakers in the 2012 Total Value Index survey remain imports, domestic brands, specifically Ford and General Motors, now command a majority of top picks in specific model categories. ?An important ?time marker? in this year?s study is that for the first time in over 10 years American manufacturers lead the number of Total Value winners with 11 segment leaders,? says Chris Chaney, Strategic Vision?s vice president and head of automotive research. ?This is an important milestone toward the ?domestic comeback.??

For its part, General Motors took top segment positions with such models as the midsize Cadillac CTS and CTS Coupe, Chevrolet Corvette sport coupe, the full-size GMC Yukon SUV and the Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle. Ford boasted category leaders with the midsize Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, Mustang Convertible, the seven-passenger Flex crossover SUV and the F150 and F250/350 pickup trucks.

Forbes.com slideshow: See the best new-car values

For the first time, four hybrid and electric-powered models were cited by Strategic Vision as being top values in their respective categories, including the Chevrolet Volt, Honda Civic Hybrid, Nissan Leaf and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. Strategic Vision attributes their recognition to wider marketplace acceptance and desirability for alternative-fuel vehicles, along with the perception that they are becoming better values as fuel prices continue to rise.

?Even though the median price of a Chevy Volt was $43,000, owners believe that for every dollar spent, they got more than did buyers of other vehicles,? says Strategic Vision president Alexander Edwards. ?Customers had tremendous value appreciation for Volt?s technical innovation, warranty, standard equipment and certainly fuel economy.?

Among upscale vehicles, so-called ?smart luxury? cars that deliver value for the money as well as certified brand cache dominated the segment leaders in Total Value Index scores. These include such models?as the Audi A8 sedan and Q7 sport-utility vehicle, BMW Z4 roadster and the Volvo C70 convertible and XC60 crossover SUV.

?Smart luxury is the new trend for those segments that are premium, but within the reach of more customers who appreciate innovation, an exceptional array of standard equipment and present a strong value-equation,? says Chaney. ?You will be hearing about smart luxury more and more in the near future, even if the economy takes sure-footed positive steps.?

Strategic Vision?s Total Value Index ratings are computed on a 1,000-point scale. They?re based on extensive owner surveys that consider 442 separate new-car attributes, including a vehicle?s negotiated transaction price, standard equipment, fuel economy, warranty, reliability, resale value and operating costs and various aspects of customer satisfaction. Also noted is a model?s degree of technical innovation which, to quote the company?s news release, ?must be impactful, intuitive and true to what owners desire.?

The company claims its Total Value Index study is the most inclusive in the industry, perhaps to the point of sounding a bit intrusive. ?In addition to vehicle perceptions, we know what political party the owner claims, their personal media habits and hobbies, as well as what ethnicity they claim,? Chaney explains.

Perhaps at some point they?ll let us know what models, say, Republican Irish Catholic Facebook users who collect cookie jars are driving these days.

The Voice Recap: Xtina 1, Tony Lucca 0

After 12 of the top 24 gave it their all last week, The Voice returned for part two of the latest round last night, treating the audience to some great performances.

And a few that were less than great. But so it goes.

With six members of Team Adam Levine and six members of Team Cee Lo Green battling for just four spots apiece, there was a lot on the line Monday.

Let's break down the performances one by one:

The Voice Promo Pic

Katrina Parker - "Tonight Tonight" (Team Adam)

Adam thought she did great, but no one will mistake her for Adele, who he so desperately wanted her to break away from. Better than average, not superb.

Cheesa - "Don't Leave Me This Way" (Team Cee Lo)

Cheesa did well, but like Katrina, didn't knock any socks off, and might leave her fate in the hands of the people who perform after. Too many dancers, too.

Tonny Lucca - "In Your Eyes" (Team Adam)

He wasn't that bad, but Christina launched into a rant about how Tony has no versatility and would only get votes because of his personal popularity, etc.

It was quite mean at worst, totally random at best. Adam stuck up for his boy and said Tony made him feel good with the song ... will America agree?

Kim Yarbrough - "Rolling in the Deep" (Team Adam)

Singing such an unbelievably good and popular song from such a dynamic, unique artist put her at a disadvantage this week. She just didn't have it.

Adam said that it is hard to do Adele because she's such a freak. True enough. He also loves Kim to death. Will America love her enough to keep her?

James Massone - "Don't Know Why" (Team Cee Lo)

Blake said he almost through his panties on the stage. That about sums it up. Cee Lo thought James might be too attentive to the crowd. Still strong.

Tony Lucca on The Voice

Juliet Simms - "Roxanne" (Team Cee Lo)

This was the one. Hitting every note flawlessly and commanding the stage with each movement, Juliet put the five who went before her on notice.

Adam admitted it was the best performance he's seen so far on the show. Xtina said it was dope, much like everything else was this week for her.

In Juliet's case, though, it was actually true.

Mathai - "Ordinary People" (Team Adam)

Juliet was a tough act to follow, but Mathai stepped up big, with a song that showed utter control of her voice, showcased in uniquely perfect ways.

The judges all agreed that this was something special, all but guaranteeing Mathai a spot in the Sweet 16, even if Adam has to save her tonight.

Tony Vincent - "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (Team Cee Lo)

He has a good voice, but the red monsters and the fact that he feels like an '80s music video character detract from it somewhat. The vibe felt off.

Karla Davis - "Airplanes" (Team Adam)

She goes from country to hip hop? Really? After the coaches didn't even want Moses to rap? The terrible song choice left her behind the eight ball.

Erin Martin - "Walk Like an Egyptian" (Team Cee Lo)

This was almost as bad of a song choice, given that it doesn't require any actual singing. Nice work getting people to take you seriously, The Voice.

Pip - "When You Were Young" (Team Adam)

Pip is not a rocker, however, he did his darndest to pull it off and got better as it went along, despite some pitch problems. He'll be alright after this.

Adam said he surprised everybody by doing this song, which was definitely true, and he acquitted himself well. Now he can go back to his strengths.

Jamar Rogers - "Are You Gonna Go My Way" (Team Cee Lo)

His voice sounded great up there, and his performance was also solid, but all the overproduction didn't help, and he wasn't electric. So, we'll see.

Tonight, three contestants from Team Adam and from Team Cee Lo will make it through on votes. Each coach will then have to pick one wild card.

Who do you think should advance? Tell us below!

Exclusive look: 'Mama's Boys' want to be babied

By Anna Chan

The special bond between mother and son is a beautiful thing. When the little guy is young, he gets plenty of love, good advice, delicious meals and maybe even a maid of sorts from Mom while living at home.?

But eventually, it comes time to fly the coop -- unless he's one of the 30-something men who prefers to stay at home and be babied in adulthood?on TLC's new series "Mama's Boys of the Bronx."

The eight-part series takes a look at the lives of five Italian-American men -- Anthony, Frankie, Giovanni, Peter and Chip -- who all live happily at home with their mothers and have no plans to leave. (Yes, they're all employed.)?

And why should they? The mothers -- who, despite wanting to see their sons marry "good Italian girls" -- ?love having the boys around and even do their laundry, cook for them, clean for them, shop for them and of course, nag them.

Take 38-year-old Giovanni, for example. He moved in with his Aunt Gina after his mother passed away not long ago. In an exclusive sneak peek TLC shared with TODAY.com, the aspiring fashion designer takes some ribbing from his aunt after he turns away her delicious homemade raviolis.?

"Giovan, you know where you gotta lose weight?" Gina snaps. "Your nose! You got a #$&%*^% vacuum cleaner over there! And what time you coming home? You eat no ravioli, you got no ass, and that's it! At least my pants stay up."

Yes, even with all that, Giovanni prefers to live at home. (That must be some amazing ravioli.)?

Check out our exclusive clip:

?

The series premieres at 10 p.m., Monday, April 9 on TLC.

Think the guys will be able to find "good Italian girls" to marry after their lives are featured on the show? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

Cheaters Learn the Truth about Affairs ? MarriageSherpa

Some cheaters will admit that they felt they may be ?missing out? on something by being married. So, your spouse?s answer to that idea was to have an affair.??

But, cheaters soon find out the truth.??

In this blog, I?ll tell you what the vast majority of cheaters discover, and 3 tips for rebuilding your marriage after an affair.?

The Truth of an Affair??

There will always be the cheater who wants out of their marriage. They refuse to put any effort into trying to save their marriage, and think that starting over with someone new means there will be no work involved.?

Those early days are easy, aren?t they??

But they will likely end up moving through new relationships, one after another, always searching for that elusive thing they?re ?missing.??

On the other hand, a smart cheater quickly realizes that whatever they may feel they?re searching for, it won?t be found outside of themselves in someone new. And new relationships will still eventually run into problems?it?s inevitable when you bring two different, individual human beings together.??

The truth is, an affair is not the answer?no matter how you phrase the question.??

Sure, you and your spouse may have problems, even seemingly insurmountable issues, especially after the affair. If your spouse cheated, no doubt they thought things would get better in their life if they escaped their present problems. They may have even thought for a moment they were missing out on the chance for a ?better? relationship.??

Again, it?s hard to avoid the inevitable: a clash of opinions, ideas, and values. So, leaving what they have today doesn?t mean their life will necessarily improve. There are people out there who have divorced and ended up remarrying: they found out the truth, that the grass is not as green as they thought on the other side.??

And that?s what the cheater soon discovers? they?ve made a mistake, and their spouse is more than enough for them. They aren?t missing anything other than the opportunity to grow the relationship they?re in, to work through and resolve its problems, and to not toss in the towel at the first sign of trouble.?

The cheater took a huge chance on losing you. The affair may be more than you can handle, and you won?t want to rebuild your marriage or have anything to do with your spouse. This is a decision that only you can make, and it certainly can?t be made in the early days after an affair has been found out.?

If and when you do decide to try to save your marriage, here are three tips to help you rebuild the relationship that has been so severely tested by your spouse?s betrayal. All three are based on types of transparency:?

Tip #1: Share Your Feelings?

Often, couples allow problems to dig deep into their relationship and fester because no one wants to rock the boat. If your partner does something to upset you, it is much healthier in the long run to share your feelings than to attempt to hide or otherwise tamp them down.??

Transparency of feelings means your spouse doesn?t have to wonder, by virtue of your actions, that they?ve done something wrong or that you?re upset about something. By telling your spouse how you are feeling, you are practicing a healthy transparency.??

Tip #2: Share Your Thoughts?

Similar to sharing your feelings is sharing your thoughts. For both feelings and thoughts, it doesn?t just have to be negative things: when you?re feeling good or having positive thoughts about the future?share that with your spouse. Transparency of thoughts let?s your partner in on all aspects of your inner world, helping you to build intimacy between you.??

Tip #3: Share Your Dreams?

Many couples forget to update their partner on where they?re at in life. This can lead to that desire to ?search for what?s missing.? Really, all that?s missing is the close connection you may have once shared with your spouse, which included this level of sharing of yourself, including your hopes and dreams.

My best to you in healing from the affair and rebuilding your marriage.

Did your spouse cheat, and then admit they felt they were missing out, or missing something in their life?

Do you think your spouse learned the truth about affairs?

Are you willing to consider rebuilding your marriage, and practice all-encompassing transparency?

Please share your ideas and personal experiences on this topic with other members of the community.

Wishing you hope and healing for your marriage,

Stephanie Anderson
