Many elementary school students struggle with math concepts because they have difficulty connecting the material to things that are important to them. Therefore the key to teaching basic mathematics is to engage students in activities that are meaningful and interactive. After all, the best teachers know that math help for 4th graders is most helpful if the students find it fun. Try these five fun and interactive exercises in your class:

1. Teach fractions with food. Use wooden play food cut into various numbers of pieces to introduce the concept. To whet their appetites for learning even more, bring in edible object lessons. Show students how pieces of a pumpkin pie make up the whole pie. Or, allow them to try their hand at cutting a piece of fruit into equal sections and challenge them to place the correct number of pieces onto a plate to represent a certain fraction.

2. Motivate students to memorize multiplication tables with games and speed contests. Try the perennial classroom favorite by filling in blank bingo sheets with number solutions and call out multiplication problems. Students will need to solve the problems in their heads to place their markers on their bingo cards. Or boost interest with a competition. Give students a speed test of 20 multiplication or division problems and reward the first person to complete the problem set and get it onto your desk. Keep a chart at the front of the classroom to honor those with the fastest times and encourage all your students to try to beat the fastest time.

3. Teach money concepts with a classroom store filled with healthy snacks, school supplies, stickers and other fun items. Students will love the incentive of picking out their own prizes. Draw paper money in common denominations. Enlist your class to cut out the money and then place it in a class wallet or piggy bank. Reward students who solve the daily bell ringer problem set correctly with the paper money and allow them to use the money to purchase prizes from the store. Require students to demonstrate their understanding of making the correct change in order to receive their desired prize.

4. Teach the concept of years, decades, centuries and millenniums by creating a wall-sized time line on butcher block paper. Assign each student a few historical events from both recent and ancient history to research for homework. Help students to label the time line with their event and the date. Allow students to also place their own birthdays on the time line for an added way to personalize the project.

5. Make geometric concepts interactive by using shapes in a variety of fun activities. For example, have a geometric shape show and tell day where students bring in a favorite object from home that represents a particular shape. Or, group students into teams and have them go on a shape scavenger hunt by collecting a certain number of objects for each shape on the scavenger list.

There is no reason why math should stick to the same ol? boring routines when trying to get kids to learn and love it. Instead, learn to incorporate it into everyday living situations, as well as fun games, so that kids actually get excited by math.

Study IDs 'zeolite' minerals that are one-third more efficient for carbon capture

HOUSTON -- (May 30, 2012) -- A detailed analysis of more than 4 million absorbent minerals has determined that new materials could help electricity producers slash as much as 30 percent of the "parasitic energy" costs associated with removing carbon dioxide from power plant emissions.

The research by scientists at Rice University, the University of California, Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) was published online this week in the journal Nature Materials.

Coal- and natural-gas-fired power plants account for about half of the carbon dioxide (CO2) that humans add to the atmosphere each year, but current technology for capturing that CO2 and storing it underground can gobble up as much as one-third of the steam the plant could otherwise use to make electricity.

In the new study, researchers found that commonly used industrial minerals called zeolites could significantly improve the energy efficiency of "carbon capture" technology.

"It looks like we can beat the current state-of-the-art technology by about 30 percent, and not just with one or two zeolites," said study co-author Michael Deem, Rice's John W. Cox Professor of Bioengineering and professor of physics and astronomy. "Our analysis showed that dozens of zeolites are more efficient than the amine absorbents currently used for CO2 capture."

Commercial power plants do not capture CO2 on a large scale, but the technology has been tested at pilot plants. At test plants, flue gases are funneled through a bath of ammonia-like chemicals called amines. The amines are then boiled to release the captured CO2, and additional energy is required to compress the CO2 so it can be pumped underground. The "parasitic energy" costs associated with current technology is high; up to one-third of the steam that could be used to generate electricity is siphoned off to boil the amines and liquefy the CO2.

Deem said the new study is the first to compare the "parasitic energy" costs for a whole class of carbon-capture materials. The study found dozens of zeolites that could remove CO2 from flue gas for a lower energy cost than amines could.

Zeolites are common minerals made mostly of silicon and oxygen. About 40 exist in nature, and there are about 160 man-made types. All zeolites are highly porous -- like microscopic Swiss cheese -- and the pore sizes and shapes vary depending upon how the silicon and oxygen atoms are arranged. The pores act like tiny reaction vessels that capture, sort and spur chemical reactions of various kinds, depending upon the size and shape of the pores. The chemical industry uses zeolites to refine gasoline and to make laundry detergent and many other products.

In 2007, Deem and colleagues used computers to calculate millions of atomic formulations for zeolites, and they have continued to add information to the resulting catalog, which contains about 4 million zeolite structures.

In the new study, the zeolite database was examined with a new computer model designed to identify candidates for CO2 capture. The new model was created by a team led by co-author Berend Smit, UC Berkeley's Chancellor's Professor in the departments of chemical and biomolecular engineering and of chemistry and a faculty senior scientist at LBNL. Smit and his UC Berkeley group worked with study co-author Abhoyjit Bhown, a technical executive at EPRI, to establish the best criteria for a good carbon capture material. Focusing on the energy costs of capture, release and compression, they created a formula to calculate the energy consumption for any materials in the zeolite database.

Running the painstaking calculations to compare the CO2-capture abilities of each zeolite would have taken approximately five years with standard central processing units (CPUs), so Smit and his colleagues at UC-Berkeley and LBNL created a new way to run the calculations on graphics processing units, or GPUs -- the processors used in PC graphics cards. Deem said the GPU technique cut the compute time to about one month, which made the project feasible.

Smit said, "Our database of carbon capture materials is going to be coupled to a model of a full plant design, so if we have a new material, we can immediately see whether this material makes sense for an actual design."

Study co-authors include graduate students Li-Chiang Lin and Joseph Swisher, both of UC Berkeley; Adam Berger of the EPRI; Richard Martin, Chris Rycroft and Maciej Haranczyk, all of LBNL's Computational Research Division; and postdoctoral fellows Jihan Kim and Kuldeep Jariwala of LBNL's Materials Science Division. This research was supported by the Department of Energy, the Advanced Research Projects Agency--Energy and EPRI's Office of Technology Innovation.

Question by : Recommendations for 24 male on health, dental, and vision insurance?
I?m a 24 year old male. I have no insurance at the moment, but would like to get all three in a policy? Can anyone give me a recommendation that has good coverage at a reasonable price?

Best answer:

Answer by Boppity Bob
I?m with Blue Cross, and have generally been pleased with them for their health insurance, and how they handled my international case as well.

I don?t have a dental or a vision policy, but I found that most serious dental problems can be prevented *if* you brush with an electric toothbrush and floss every day. You?ll still need your 6-month cleaning.

Vision? isn?t covered by my plan, either, and that?s starting to hurt the checkbook.

Georgia Davis, Britain's Fattest Teenager, Hospitalized After Being Removed Home By Crane

Georgia Davis, a 19-year-old sadly but accurately dubbed Britain’s Fattest Teenager, had to be rushed from her home to the hospital last week.

Rushed in a relative sense.

When the 840-pound Davis collapsed with breathing problems and chest pains in the bedroom of her home in South Wales, authorities underwent an amazing eight-hour operation to evacuate her out of the house and to a hospital.

A 40-man rescue team demolished the top half of her mom’s house with sledgehammers and a circular saw to make a 10-foot by 10-foot hole.

They also tore down an internal dividing wall so Georgia Davis could be removed from her back bedroom which had become her own prison.

Georgia was then airlifted out by crane on a special stretcher and transported via ambulance that had to be reinforced to take her weight.

She had been “effectively immobile for six months” after her weight rocketed this year, pushing her to the brink with major health problems.

She had weighed in at 460 pounds when she was just 15. Doctors told the Type 2 diabetic to lose at least 280 pounds or she would die.

Davis lost 200 pounds through diet and exercise, but ultimately relapsed and ballooned to 840 pounds, thanks to a 13,000 calorie-a-day diet.

Don?t wait too long to file for bankruptcy. So many people suffer with debts, and sleepless nights for years. They could have filed for bankruptcy, and been in the clear by now. If you are thinking about filing for bankruptcy, time is of the essence. Make the decision so you can move on that much quicker.

Although filing for personal bankruptcy is one solution to debt problems, it is not the only solution. It is not necessarily the best solution. Before filing for bankruptcy, consider attempting to make payment agreements with your creditors. Credit counseling agencies will be able to help you work out such an agreement.

One of the biggest problems that people face when filing personal bankruptcy is they are in too deep before they seek help. They have borrowed against 401 K?s, IRA?s, and sold personal belongings. These things have unintended consequences. These loans are not allowable deductions in the eyes of the court and will not be used in the bankruptcy calculations.

One you realize you are in financial trouble and have decided to file for personal bankruptcy you should move quickly. Waiting to the last minute to file bankruptcy can cause a number of issues. You may face negative repercussions such as wage or bank account garnishment or foreclosure on your home. You can also not leave time enough for a thorough review of your financial situation, which will limit your available options.

Be honest when talking to your attorney. Your attorney is there to help you, and omitting details about your circumstances will not only make his/her job more difficult, but also may prevent you from getting your discharge. Furthermore, if you don?t disclose what you need to in your bankruptcy petition, you could be accused of committing bankruptcy fraud.

You should start selling things around your house and making budget cuts if you have filed for bankruptcy. Now is the time to start saving money and stop being reckless. You can focus on the future and get your finances in order, so that you can have a promising financial future for the rest of your life.

Do not attempt to pay off any of your favorite creditors before you file for bankruptcy. The reason is that all of your assets will be liquidated and each creditor gets their fair share. It is not your job to decide who deserves to be paid back and who does not.

Try not to put off filing for bankruptcy. If you need to file for bankruptcy, don?t procrastinate. Procrastinating may make legal matters more complicated. It may also cause you a great deal of unneeded stress. You need a clear head and a calm mind when preparing to file for bankruptcy. Don?t let stress complicate things.

A good personal bankruptcy tip is to take it all in stride. You have to remind yourself that you aren?t alone by having to file for bankruptcy. Many other people have found themselves in this situation and a lot of them are probably willing to offer you some form of guidance.

As noted earlier, the current economic climate keeps more people in a constant state of struggle, and many of them are turning to bankruptcy. If you decide that this option is the best one for you, hopefully this article has provided you with helpful guidance you can use to face your financial future and make positive changes.

FM Surveillance music review by Mellotron Storm

3 stars 3.5 stars. FM's third release sees the band going into more of a commercial direction so it's hit and miss for me. Still it has that warm and uplifting vibe that i so love about this band. I think it's the vocals and synths that give off that flavour i'm talking about. Ben Mink who many will remember for his guest appearance on RUSH's future "Signals" album offers up some killer electric violin and mandolin solos.

"Rocket Roll" is by far my least favourite as it seems like the band was trying to write a hit single and it just didn't turn out very well. I do like the bass though. "Orion" is excellent with prominant drums as the mandolin solos over top. It blends into "Horizons" where it turns spacey with vocals. Nice. You know i'd swear there is guitar on here but it's either distorted violin or the electric mandolin. And this goes for several of the tracks where it's difficult to tell what i'm hearing. "Random Harvest" has some nice chunky bass as the vocals join in. The violin or mandolin is lighting it up then the vocals return. "Shapes Of Things" is a YARDBIRDS cover and one that i heard often on the radio up where i live north of Toronto back in the day. It's an excellent cover, it makes me feel good.

"Seventh Heaven" is one of my favourites with those synths and a beat as the vocals join in. So good. "Father Time" puts the focus on the vocals until we get an instrumental interlude half way through. "Sofa Back" is a good instrumental with synths that remind me of RUSH. This was before RUSH was using synths though. "Destruction" ends it and i like when it picks up after 3 1/2 minutes. Good song.

There's so much that i do like about this record, especially the mood but this is a mixed bag.

These Digital Camera Binoculars Are Your Record-What-You-See Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

The fancy optics that allow us to use glass to see far have existed forever. Pirates! Magellan! Ansel Adams! Edward Weston!-they've all made use of this wonderful trick. These binoculars, though, represent an astounding EVOLUTION. Your family vacation will never be the same. Remember when your stupid binoculars couldn't record what you were seeing through the lenses? That was foolishness. Now you can record 30 seconds of your 8x magnified vision. Sure you can do that with a camera, too, but we believe you're not cynical. You recognize progress when you see it. -MA More »

Gold IRA Investing Guidelines | The Board Magazine

By Javier Snover

Gold IRA investing is a common activity nowadays. There are a few ideas that can assist investors who want precious metals in their retirement plan. Only a few IRA plans allow gold investment options so it is crucial to find IRAs that do provide these options for account holders. One tip that can help is rolling over a 401k plan into an IRA, one that allows investments in valuable metals .

If a 401k is rolled over into an IRA to ensure that gold can be a great investment option make sure that the check does not go to the account holder, yet should go instead to the handler of the new retirement account. If the investor receives the check then there could be tax penalties and additional costs, as well as a very strict time frame for making an investment these funds in another account. In the event the custodian of the completely new IRA gets the fund transfer there are no more issues or needs.

There are numerous methods that gold IRA investing can be handled. A few IRAs let gold bullion to be bought. This bullion can be through bars, ingots, and coins. Investors usually can not select gold coins for their value as a coin, just for the cost of the gold contained. Rare coins are not suitable investments with any IRA however there are many other methods to make investments in gold using this kind of account.

Stocks in mining firms that generate gold can be a way to invest in the precious metal without really taking control of the gold. A few of these stocks might stand for firms that mine and produce gold only, while some represent companies that specialize in all types of precious metals . Gold ETFs, electronically traded funds, are another intelligent option for several investors.

It is vital to keep in mind when making a choice on gold IRA investing that the cost of this metal is at record highs but this truth can alter quickly. Most financial professionals warn that retirement finances should be managed somewhat conservatively. Investors should not put the funds from retirement accounts into high risk holdings. Many IRAs that provide gold choices have particular limits in place.

The investor should examine the IRA standards in place before opening a completely new IRA account for gold options. http://goldirainvesting.org

Urban Gardening with Your Kids | Lowell Parents Network

It?s Memorial Day weekend, and the weather has been beautiful. What a great time to start gardening in the city with your kids. Spend time outside together planting a garden, and eventually, you can enjoy fresh produce from your own backyard. Or, maybe you and your family want to help start a community garden?now a reality through a new program here in Lowell. Either way, you can find resources to help urban gardeners, including a new local organization?Mill City Grows.

Founded this year, Mill City Grows works to increase community access to healthy, fresh food through the development of urban food production and distribution networks. Its current projects include the following:

  • Gardener Training Program: Throughout the summer and into the fall, Mill City Grows will host a series of workshops on growing your garden. Two upcoming workshops in early June will include information on planting techniques and growing vegetables in Massachusetts: on Saturday, June 2 from 1:30 to 3:00 PM or Tuesday, June 5 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Bring the kids and learn together. Suggested donation: $15.
  • Rotary Park Community Garden: Located in Lowell?s Back Central neighborhood on Richmond Street, the Rotary Park Community Garden offers garden plots for an annual fee of $15. Spots have been filling up, so contact Mill City Grows at millcityfarm@gmail or 978-656-1678 to see if you can still get involved.

In addition to our local resources, First Lady Michelle Obama has championed gardening and increased awareness through her own kitchen garden at the White House as part of the Let?s Move campaign. Her Kitchen Garden Checklist includes step-by-step instructions for creating your own garden, including healthy recipes for families. Even if you don?t have space for a garden at your Lowell home, you could try urban container gardening?a great option for fresh tomatoes.

Help us share examples of urban gardening in Lowell. Please send an email to lowellparentsnetwork@gmail.com with photos of your family?s garden, and we?ll share them on Facebook. Thanks, and happy gardening!

Read These Tips To Get The Right Tools And Materials For Home ...

Use family members and friends as great aids in your home improvement projects. With family and friends, you can cut the need for help from a professional that could cost quite a bit, while you also get a great deal of fun from the project. Also, you will find that they come in handy in the clean up portion of the project.

A great home improvement project that will save you a bundle is to install a programmable thermostat. These thermostats can allow you to program in a variety of different settings so that you are using your heating and cooling system only when you need it and without having to monitor it constantly.

To prevent animals like birds or squirrels from nesting in your chimney, install a chimney cap. These devices feature mesh sides that allow smoke to escape, but the solid top prevents animals from entering your chimney to build nests, which can ignite and cause a chimney fire when you use the fireplace.

Install a lazy Susan in those odd corner cabinets. It can be difficult to properly use the storage space they provide, if you have to get down on your hands and knees to search for the items in the back corners. A lazy Susan will allow you to reach your items easily every time.

Add privacy while changing the look of a door or window with inexpensive window films. These films cling to glass and provide a frosted or otherwise textured look, which prevents passersby from seeing into your home. This solution is ideal for windows located inside a bathroom or for front doors.

It is amazing sometimes how people settle for the existing paint schemes of the rooms in their homes. On the other hand, they choose schemes themselves through lack of experience that do basically nothing for the value and feel of their home. Choose some brilliant paint schemes today and see just how far painting a room can go with helping the value and feel of your home.

Installing new shelves in a garage or other area can give one much more space to store whatever they choose while also clearing space off the ground. This will open up the walking areas of the room and also make things look more organized. Shelves can be used for home improvement needs.

Try keeping your home insulated. Insulating your walls is a relatively low cost home improvement that will help you save money in the long run, along with protecting the environment. Keeping your house insulated not only keeps it warm in winter, but it also keeps it cool in the summer.

Home improvement is an ongoing cycle depending on your style changes or needed repairs. Restyling your kitchen may take many different steps but when you are finished you will be happily pleased. Freshly painted cabinets, new snazzy hardware, and now you can start shopping for those new counter-tops.

If you are renovating a small room, replace carpeting with hard flooring, such as hardwood, laminate, or tile. Carpet in a small room will congest the visual field and make the room feel even smaller. The right arrangement of floor tiles or planks, conversely, can make the room feel larger.

This article was written with the hopes of providing homeowners the information to help them realize that they can start the home improvement projects that they are considering. Hopefully you have found the information that you need to get going on that project that you have been considering for some time.

More Records for Obama & Obamanomics: Record Low for High School Students Jobs and Record High for Those Working Past Age 65

?

Hey America, Three plus years into the Obama Presidency, How?s that ?Hopey-Changey? thing working out for ya? More records for Obama and jobs ??

Parents, are you finding it difficult for your high school kids to get summer jobs? You are not alone. Thanks to the Barack Obama job recovery we can add two more records to his list of accomplishments, the young workers are getting squeezed out of the market because positions are being filled by older workers. Making matters worse, the elderly cannot afford to retire. As reported at the Washington Times, according to the National Center for Education Statistics the high school job market has hit its lowest level in 20 years. The jobs once held by young high school kids are now being taken by those older than them who have been forced to take lesser positions thanks to the so-called Obama job recovery. A meager 16% of high school age kids are now employed as opposed to 32% in 1990.

The American job market is no place for students as the number of employed high schoolers has hit its lowest level in more than 20 years, according to new figures from the National Center for Education Statistics.

In 1990, 32 percent of high school students held jobs, versus just 16 percent now. Blame their elders.

Sectors that traditionally have offered teens their first paying gig ? fast-food chains, movie theaters, malls and big-box retailers ? have now become the last resorts for out-of-work college graduates or older Americans forced back into the labor force out of sheer financial necessity. The resulting squeeze has left students on the outside looking in.

No one need look no further than the McJobless. Our American youth used to be able to get a job at McDonald?s after school and learn what it means to be responsible, show up for work and get paid for a days work. Not under Barack Obama. Businesses that used to predominately hire the HS kids now can hire older and more experienced workers at the same pay.

Local McDonald?s managers, for example, are no longer forced to accept young workers who can show up after class. They now have the option to hire older employees with more experience and, in many cases, much more education.

?They think, ?I can hire this old guy instead. He already knows how to work, so we don?t need to teach him.??

But wait, it gets worse if that is possible. Not only are young workers at an all-time low, those individuals working who are 65 years and older are at an all-time high. They simply cannot afford to retire. As reported at the NY Times, But that may have worsened the employment prospects for younger workers. Ya think?

Labor Department figures indicate that the percentage of workers over the traditional retirement age of 65 is at a record high. But, the figures show, job totals fell sharply for men under 55 during the recession and have only started to recover, while the proportion of women ages 25 to 54 with jobs also slid and is close to the lowest level of the last two decades.

?The fact of the matter is that this aging-but-not-yet-aged segment of the baby boomer class can?t afford to retire,? said David A. Rosenberg, the chief economist of Gluskin Sheff, a Canadian firm, noting that overall household net worth was 15 percent lower than at the prerecession peak. ?Dreams of the 5,000-square-foot McMansion being a viable retirement asset.

So why is any one voting for Barack Obama again? Any one who actually thinks that Obama has any coherent economic jobs growth plan is delusional. Every demographic has suffered under Obama and the more a demographic struggles with high unemployment like blacks, the more they back Obama. That?s a brilliant position.

EXIT QUESTION: So the older people are working longer and affecting the job prospects of the younger workers, this is even before changes have been made to the going broke Social Security plan. So what is going to happen when the government raises the retirement age from 65 to 68?

Samsung Galaxy S III heading to T-Mobile U.S. on June 20?

Android Central

The Samsung Galaxy S III is still real hot news, and quite rightly so. As we approach the impending international launch -- starting May 29 in case you forgot -- the big release date questions are still coming from eager Android fans in the US.?According to a rumor posted by?TmoNews,??for T-Mobile at least, the wait might not be too much longer.?

Apparently, the Pebble Blue variant of the Galaxy S III, in both 16GB and 32GB form, will be available from June 20. The 16GB Ceramic White version will then follow on July 11. This follows on from the leaked June 20 graphics showing availability north of the border in Canada. (And this latest leak also pegs the Galaxy Note for July 11, so there's that.)

Big disclaimer though folks as usual, this is a huge old scoop of rumor. Nothing short of what we'd expect with such a massive launch as this one. But Samsung did show off an enormous "U.S. in June" slide at the London keynote, so there is a possibility of there being something behind this one.?

Whitecaps FC rally for draw vs. Timbers

By ANNE M. PETERSON

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:02 a.m. ET May 27, 2012

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Darren Mattocks' goal in the 84th minute gave the Vancouver Whitecaps a 1-1 tie with the Portland Timbers on Saturday night in a Cascadia Cup match delayed by a severe thunderstorm that rolled through downtown Portland.

Kris Boyd scored in the 67th minute for the Timbers (3-5-4), who were coming off a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Fire last Sunday that pulled them out of last place in the Western Conference.

The Whitecaps (5-3-4) remained a victory from matching their win total from 2011, when they finished last in the West.

Portland, which has been giving up late goals all season, was stunned.

"With the way we were playing for the majority of the game, I think there were a lot of positives to take. But once again we finished the game without the three points," Boyd said.

Portland captain Jack Jewsbury weighed in: "I felt like, in terms of the full 90 minutes, that was one of our better performances of the year. So yeah, it's disappointing."

The match was the second in the fan-created Cascadia Cup rivalry among Major League Soccer's Pacific Northwest trio: the Timbers, Whitecaps and the Seattle Sounders. Vancouver and Seattle opened the competition on May 19 with a 2-all tie at BC Place.

In MLS play, Vancouver's previous match was the draw with the Sounders. The Whitecaps fell 1-0 to Toronto on Wednesday night in the decisive match of the Canadian Championship. With the win, the Reds will represent Canada in the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League.

The Timbers fell 1-0 Wednesday in an exhibition against Spain's Valencia, but most of Portland's starters were used sparingly or rested, including Boyd, a former Scottish national team forward.

Jewsbury was a starter against Vancouver after missing a match with a sore hip. Defender Futty Danso sat out with a left hamstring strain.

Jewsbury got a head on a corner kick from Kalif Alhassan in the 22nd minute, but it went wide. The Whitecaps got their chance in the 45th minute, but Brazilian Camilo Sanvezzo's shot when just over the bar.

The shot came just as severe weather settled in over Jeld-Wen Field. The match made it to the half, but the resumption of play was delayed by lightning, thunder and sheets of rain.

Alain Rochat's free kick in the 55th minute also sailed over the bar.

Portland went ahead when Boyd punched the ball in off a deflection from goalkeeper Joe Cannon. Boyd leads the Timbers with four goals this season.

Mattocks scored about a minute after he was subbed in with a shot from about 8 feet out.

"Anyone who knows soccer knows that that was a thrilling match on both sides," Vancouver coach Martin Rennie said.

Timbers coach John Spencer voiced concern about a non-call when Alhassan was tackled in the penalty area away from the ball in the 64th minute.

"I think we're going to try and concentrate on the positives tonight," Spencer said. "We were by far the best team on the field."

The Timbers are 26-33-12 against Vancouver, dating to the North American Soccer League in the mid-1970s.

The original Cascadia Cup was introduced in 2004 when the Timbers, Whitecaps and Sounders were part of the United Soccer Leagues first division. Fans pooled their money to buy a 2-foot tall trophy, which went to the team that finishes with the best record in head-to-head matches among the trio, based on a points system.

Seattle claimed the Cascadia Cup for the first time at the MLS level by winning at both Portland and Vancouver last season and coming away with draws at home against each side.

Figuring out the Cup winner this season will be a bit more complicated. With the league going to an unbalanced schedule, the Whitecaps, Sounders and Timbers will play each other three times. Seattle has to play twice at Vancouver and twice at Portland with just one home game against each this season. Vancouver will travel twice to Portland, with the first match in that rivalry on May 26.

The balance will be flipped next season with Seattle hosting Portland and Vancouver twice and the Whitecaps hosting the Timbers two times.
