French 'Elvis' leaves Caribbean hospital for US

FORT-DE-FRANCE, Martinique (AP) ? French singer Johnny Hallyday is out of a Caribbean hospital and on his way to Los Angeles.

The 69-year-old performer whose glittery rock shows have led some to call him the "French Elvis," spent five days in a hospital on the island of Martinique. He was in the cardiac section of the hospital but sent a message to fans via Instagram that it was nothing but a case of "severe bronchitis."

Hallyday boarded a flight early Friday from the French island to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was then expected to travel to Los Angeles, where he has a home. He walked slowly to the airplane, unaided except by an umbrella for the rain.

The singer was first hospitalized Sunday in Guadeloupe, then moved the next day to Martinique.

Zynga Hires a New Executive to Lead Online Gambling Ambitions ...

Zynga has added some firepower to its online gambling ambitions.

AllThingsD has learned that Maytal Ginzburg is joining Zynga as the company?s chief operating officer in charge of new markets, according to her LinkedIn profile.

As recently as July, Ginzburg was the SVP of regulated markets at 888 Holdings, where she was responsible for acquiring customers and other operations.

888 Holdings operates an online portal at 888.com, offering real-money?games such as poker, bingo and sports betting, in markets where online gambling is regulated. More recently, it started to investigate the opportunity in social and mobile gaming through the 2010 acquisition of Mytopia from Real Dice.

Ginzburg has not yet started to work at Zynga, but is expected to begin soon.?Social Casino Intelligence?was first to point out?that she was hired by the company. A spokesman declined to comment.

The hire is important for the Facebook games maker because it shows that, while a number of executives have decided to leave,?it can still recruit talent at a very high level.

During the company?s last earnings call, CEO Mark Pincus confirmed that Zynga?s first real-money products were in development, and that it believes it has a huge opportunity to?leverage its strong casino presence on Facebook, including with Zynga Poker and newer properties, like Bingo and Slots.?Pincus said he expects to launch Zynga?s first real-money gaming products in international markets in the first half of 2013, subject to licensing approvals.

At this time, it?s unclear what Ginzburg will be doing at Zynga, but from an interview she conducted with a U.K. publication, you can tell Zynga was very much on her radar.

She told Inside Poker Business that she believed it was important to integrate social features into 888?s existing products in order to make interactions less serious and more welcoming to casual players. One product that social features helped with was PokerCams, which allowed users to see who they were playing with online.

?We want to attract players who will play for casual entertainment, and we therefore needed to deliver social platforms that are easy to use yet provide all the interactive features users expect,? Ginzburg told Inside Poker Business, adding that ?the biggest risk we were running was that casual players avoided the product because of a lack of interaction, which is why so many have gone to Zynga.?

Petrov's F1 career in danger

Moscow, Aug 31

Vitaly Petrov?s career as Russia?s only Formula One driver hangs in balance after the Russian government cut off financial support, his manager Oksana Kosachenko said.

Petrov became the first Russian in F1 when he joined Renault in 2010. He now drives for Caterham, where his sponsors include government owned Russian Helicopters while an earlier sponsor was the state-run Lada car maker.

?We have now lost government support,? Kosachenko said Thursday.

?There?s never been interest from sponsors. I?ve always said that it?s impossible to find sponsors in Russia for a project like Formula One. When there was support at the top level of government, this project worked commendably.?

Petrov has private sector sponsorship from Russian chemical company Sibur.

The resulting cash crisis could end Petrov?s F1 career, Kosachenko suggested.

?I don?t rule out a scenario in which we have to end this Russian driver?s competition in Formula One,? she said.

Despite the lack of Russian backing, talks on finding Petrov a seat for next year were otherwise progressing well, she added.

Kosachenko said that she was talking to Caterham and three other teams about a place for Petrov next season.

Petrov achieved the only podium finish of his career when he finished third at the Australian Grand Prix last year for Lotus Renault.

Petrov joined Caterham shortly before this season began, displacing veteran Italian Jarno Trulli and has recorded the team?s best result of the season with 13th in Valencia in June.

'Blue moon' on same day as Neil Armstrong service

(AP) ? There's a rare 'blue moon' on Friday, a fitting wink to Neil Armstrong by the cosmic calendar.

That's the day of a private service for Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, who died last Saturday in Ohio at age 82.

A blue moon occurs when there's a second full moon in one calendar month. It won't happen again until July 2015. The full moon cycle is 29.5 days so a blue moon is uncommon and has come to mean something rare. The moon actually won't be colored blue.

Harvard University astronomer Avi Loeb said the moon is far more important to lovers, literature and folklore than to science.

Armstrong's family has suggested paying tribute to him by looking at the moon and giving the astronaut a wink.

Isaac's Size, Speed Help It Pack A Heavyweight Punch

People walk in the storm surge from Hurricane Isaac along Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans. Isaac was later downgraded to a tropical storm as it continued to grind its way through the Gulf Coast, dropping torrential rain and generating dangerous storm surges.

Isaac might not be in the same league as Hurricane Katrina seven years ago, but the latest storm to batter Louisiana's Gulf Coast is punching above its weight class in more ways than one, scientists say.

The 2005 Hurricane Katrina, which devastated Louisiana and parts of Mississippi and Alabama, was a Category 3 storm (sustained winds of 125 mph) moving at about 15 mph when it made landfall on the Gulf Coast. By comparison, Isaac was a weak Category 1 storm as measured on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with sustained winds of 74-95 mph. By Wednesday afternoon, Isaac had been downgraded to a tropical storm, although it still was close to the Gulf Coast and continued to dump torrential rain.

While Isaac is considerably less intense than Katrina, it is large and slow ? a dangerous combination ? and it's moving west of the Mississippi River, a track that intensifies storm surge, says Timothy Shott, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Tropical Cyclone Program.

"This storm has sustained tropical storm force winds currently extending out to about 175 miles from the center and the hurricane force about 45 miles from the center," Shott told NPR at about noon ET Wednesday.

Measuring Isaac on three criteria ? storm surge, rainfall and wind ? Shott would rate the storm "high impact" on all of them.

Even though the winds are Category 1, the slow movement of the storm increases their effect, he says. "There's also a connection between the size of the storm and the storm surge," Shott says. "We're seeing the storm surge inundation values coming in at 8, 9, 10 feet in those southeast Louisiana parishes."

When it comes to predicting storm surge, a lot of factors come into play, says Brian McNoldy, a senior research assistant at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami.

Among the questions: How large is the storm? How far do the tropical-force winds extend? How fast is it moving and how long has it been moving in the same way? How deep is the ocean offshore?

"Then the onshore land makes a difference too," McNoldy says. "If the land is really, really flat, like New Orleans, the storm surge can go a lot farther inland."

Putting 'The Cork' In Place

And, with Isaac moving overland at less than 10 mph, Isaac will have plenty of time ? perhaps 20 hours in some areas ? to bottle up storm surge in the Mississippi, effectively placing a cork in the bottom as it continues to add more water in the form of torrential rainfall.

It's not uncommon for hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico to be relatively slow movers and Isaac had been forecast to be just that, Shott says.

"Not every storm moves quickly and sometimes along the Gulf Coast and at these lower latitudes, the storms can slow down as this one has and as it was expected to do," he says.

McNoldy calls Isaac's stalling out over one of the most vulnerable flood plains in the country just "bad timing," but says it could have been far worse.

"We just got really lucky that this didn't strengthen more as it was moving across the Gulf of Mexico these last few days," he says.

Better forecasting has also been a boon. It turns out that models are getting quite good at predicting a storm's path, its speed and even the elusive storm surge. But predicting a hurricane's intensity has proved more difficult, McNoldy says.

"For intensity, in some cases we don't even know if we're putting the right data into the models," he says.

Childhood Exposure to Asbestos Increases Disease Risk Broadly ...

Australian researchers offer additional evidence that exposure to asbestos early in life may lead to a variety of serious health issues in addition to mesothelioma and lung cancer.

A new study, published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, reports that adults who were exposed to crocidolite asbestos in early childhood have an elevated risk of a range of cancers and heart disease. ?All forms of asbestos cause cancer in humans, according to the World Health Organization. But this is the first study to investigate cancer incidence among adults exposed as children to crocidolite, also known as blue asbestos.

The researchers at Western Australia Institute for Medical Research analyzed the health data of approximately 2,500 people who grew up in Wittenoom, a now-abandoned mining town in Western Australia where crocidolite asbestos was mined for nearly 20 years.

The researchers observed that women raised in Wittenoom had a 70 to 113 times greater risk of developing mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lung and abdominal cavity, than among the overall population. Men also showed an increased risk of developing mesothelioma as well as an increased risk of brain, colorectal and prostate cancer and leukemia.

The research also suggests a slightly elevated risk of heart disease. Another study from the United Kingdom also recently reported an increased risk of heart disease among those exposed to asbestos.

New York cancer researchers at Mt. Sinai Medical Center are conducting an ambitious study of thousands of people who grew up between 1950 and 1999 in Libby, Montana, then moved away. Lung function develops until a child reaches age 18. Examining the lungs of people who spent their childhoods in Libby and then left may have reveal how much damage occurs from asbestos in childhood, the New York mesothelioma researchers have said.

The federal government has declared a health emergency in Libby, where asbestos contamination was widespread from a vermiculite mine and hundreds have died from asbestos related disease.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer and a signature disease of asbestos exposure. Approximately 2,500 to 3,000 Americans are diagnosed annually with the disease and a similar number die. The disease is incurable, though there are treatments including chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

Most people diagnosed with mesothelioma are older workers, retired workers or veterans who were exposed to asbestos fibers in the workplace or military service. Microscopic asbestos fibers when inhaled can lodge in the lungs and remain there a lifetime causing inflammation that eventually leads to asbestos related disease.

ShowBed.com ? Blog Archive ? New Personnel Could be a Safety ...

30 August

Author: MasinoKrein ?/ ?Category: Uncategorized

Asking new workers about their prior safety education and function knowledge aids businesses make certain the workers know the basics of workplace safety. As well many accidents take place due to the fact businesses assume that everybody knows the basics. Organizations several occasions will locate the worker didn?t know the basics only following an accident occurs. Ensure each and every new worker knows their rights and responsibilities.

Workers must know they?ve the correct to take part in well being and safety education and safety applications in the workplace. They also possess the appropriate to understand about hazards they could possibly be exposed inside the workplace. They?ve the best to refuse unsafe work and they?ve the responsibility to comply with safety procedures and wear any personal protective gear that may be needed by the organization and that?s necessary by law.

New workers are much more susceptible to accidents than these that have expertise within the business workplace. New workers might be classified a lot of methods. Essentially the most obvious is any new hire; this can be permanent or temporary personnel and can contain supervisors, with or with no experience in the company or perhaps the business. Student workers, co-op placements or apprentices are also obviously new towards the workplace. Much less obvious are present workers who?re assigned new jobs. Contractors, subcontractors, and visitors for your workplace all need to have to understand the common safety rules in the workplace.

Orientation is greater than just a tour in the workplace. It ought to cover emergency procedures, workplace safety guidelines every person ought to stick to at your workplace, common needs for personal protective gear, initial aid provisions, details about exactly where the safety board is posted and any other important wellness and safety details. If possible introduce new and young workers towards the wellness and safety committee members or the health and safety representative for the duration of orientation and show them exactly where their names are posted.

Supervisors need to be in normal speak to with workers. With new personnel further speak to is going to be expected. Communication ought to freely flow two approaches amongst the supervisor along with the worker. Questions on unsafe working circumstances should be dealt with instantly. Supervisors should offer instruction and make sure safety regulations and guidelines are followed.

Providing a secure working environment and ensuring a protected start off when new personnel come to function will make sure the workers are fully capable of performing function and inside a protected manner. Safety legislation contains a general provision requiring employers to ensure their workers have already been supplied with appropriate details, instruction and supervision to protect their health and safety even though they perform their jobs. These regulations are to protect all new personnel towards the workplace. These regulations are also set to shield the business as long as documentation might be provided if there is certainly an accident.

'Nano machine shop' shapes nanowires, ultrathin films

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A new "nano machine shop" that shapes nanowires and ultrathin films could represent a future manufacturing method for tiny structures with potentially revolutionary properties.

The structures might be tuned for applications ranging from high-speed electronics to solar cells and also may have greater strength and unusual traits such as ultrahigh magnetism and "plasmonic resonance," which could lead to improved optics, computers and electronics.

The researchers used their technique to stamp nano- and microgears; form tiny circular shapes out of a material called graphene, an ultrathin sheet of carbon that holds promise for advanced technologies; and change the shape of silver nanowires, said Gary Cheng, an associate professor of industrial engineering at Purdue University.

"We do this shaping at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, like a nano-machine shop," said Cheng, who is working with doctoral students Ji Li, Yiliang Liao, Ting-Fung Chung and Sergey Suslov and physics professor Yong P. Chen.

Graphene and nanowires -- filaments 1,000 times thinner than a human hair -- have numerous potential applications. However, technologies are needed to tailor them for specific uses. The new method, called laser shock-induced shaping, makes it possible to tune nanowires by altering electrical and optoelectrical properties that are critical for electronic components.

The researchers also have shown how laser shock-induced shaping can be used to change the properties of graphene, a step toward harnessing the material for electronic applications.

Findings were detailed in research papers published in the journal Nano Letters, and the work also was highlighted earlier this month in the News and Views section of the journal Nature Photonics.

The technique works by using a multilayered sandwich structure that has a tiny mold at the bottom. Nanowires were situated directly above the mold, and other materials were layered between the nanowires and a glass cover sheet. Exposing this layered "forming unit" to an ultra-fast pulsing laser causes one of the layers to burn up, generating a downward pressure that forces the nanowires into the mold and changes their shape.

"The process could be scaled up for an industrial roll-to-roll manufacturing process by changing laser beam size and scanning speed," Cheng said. "The laser shock-induced shaping approach is fast and low-cost."

Part of the research, funded by the National Science Foundation, was carried out in a specialized clean room at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in Purdue's Discovery Park.

How To Help With A Family Tree Homework - Wyn Brooke Place

We all remember that day when we were children and our school teacher gave us homework about family trees. We were supposed to draw or make a tree detailing our family ancestry. We would start with ourselves, our siblings and our parents. Then we would trace our origins all the way back. Luckily at that time our parents were able to lend us a hand. But what if that day comes when our own children will get that same homework? Will you be able to help them as well?

What do you know?

Many people make the rookie mistake of immediately going to Google and searching. But instead of finding answers you get more questions and end up confused. Start by grabbing a piece of paper, sit down, and write all the information you know about your family. The goal is to see how much or how little knowledge you already have. If you discover you already know a lot about your family Genealogy, then good for you. If not, do not worry about it.

Dig around the house

If your family is like any other family in the world, then you would probably have pictures and other family memorabilia lying around. Go up to the attic or down to the basement or wherever you keep your precious memories. Dust them off and start learning about your roots.

Talk to relatives

This might be a no-brainer. Call or meet up with living relatives. Especially relatives of previous generations like your grandfather or great grandmother. They are basically walking encyclopedias of your family history. Not only will they share to you their knowledge but you will also make them happy by sharing your time and companionship.

As a final tip there are amazing websites online that make searching for family easier. A few of them worth mentioning are: Ancestry.com and Familysearch.org. A simple search of Genealogy Australia for example would yield excellent results.

Computer viruses could take a lesson from showy peacocks

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Computer viruses are constantly replicating throughout computer networks and wreaking havoc. But what if they had to find mates in order to reproduce?

In the current issue of Evolution, Michigan State University researchers created the digital equivalent of spring break to see how mate attraction played out through computer programs, said Chris Chandler, MSU postdoctoral researcher at MSU's BEACON Center for the Study of Evolution in Action.

"This is actually a big question that still generates a lot of debate," said Chandler, who co-authored the study with Ian Dworkin, assistant professor of zoology, and Charles Ofria, associate professor of computer science and engineering. "People have some good ideas, but they can be hard to test really well in nature, so we decided to take a different approach."

The novel approach involved creating promiscuous programs in a virtual world called Avida, a software environment in which specialized computer programs compete and reproduce. Because mutations happen when Avidians copy themselves, which lead to differences in reproductive rates, these digital organisms evolve, just like living things, added Ofria, who created Avida.

The researchers programed the Avidians with the ability to grow sexual displays -- e-peacock tails of sorts. They also allowed them to choose mates randomly. As the researchers predicted, they usually went for the showiest mates. But why?

"One school of thought argues that the main benefit of choosing an attractive partner is that your offspring also will be sexy," said Dworkin. "In the other camp are those who argue that these sexual ornaments are a sign of good health, and so choosing a showy mate ensures that you'll get good genes to pass on to your offspring."

Traditionally, biologists thought that ornamental displays clue in potential mates about an individual's virility because the structures are costly, biologically speaking; only an animal in really good health could bear the burden they impose. So the researchers altered Avidians' genetic code to allow them to grow exaggerated displays practically for free.

They expected this change to diminish the evolutionary benefits of preferring showy mates, since even the wimpiest of Avidians could now grow enormous digital tail feathers.

"I was surprised when we didn't find that at all," Chandler said. "Even when we eliminated the costs of these displays, they still evolved to be an indicator of a male's genetic quality."

MSU's BEACON Center is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Samsung vows 'all measures' to keep products in US

South Korea's Samsung Electronics vowed on Tuesday to take "all necessary measures" to keep its products on US store shelves, in response to Apple's request for a ban on sales of some smartphones.

After winning a $1.05 billion US court judgement in a patent suit last week, Apple on Monday filed a court request to ban eight Samsung mobile devices including versions of its Galaxy and Droid smartphones.

Samsung, the world's biggest technology firm, countered in a statement: "We will take all necessary measures to ensure the availability of our products in the US market."

Rival Apple says that it reserves the right to seek permanent injunctions banning the sale of all 28 Samsung devices which a jury on Friday found infringed its patents.

But it presented a shorter list of Samsung products "to address a portion of the immediate, ongoing irreparable harm that Apple is suffering".

The phones that Apple included on its list for a sales ban are old models but still available through wireless carriers and online retailers. Samsung's newest flagship products -- Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note -- were not included.

The jury in San Jose, California decided Friday that Samsung "wilfully" infringed six Apple patents for smartphones or tablet PCs.

Samsung has vowed to contest the verdict, saying courts in other countries had previously ruled it had not copied Apple's designs.

The company did not elaborate on its strategy but it is considering removing or modifying features found to have infringed Apple's patents to keep its products on the market if the sales ban is granted.

"As a last resort, we can think about workarounds," a Samsung official told AFP on condition of anonymity, referring to possible modifications.

Judge Lucy Koh has set a hearing for September 20 to consider enforcement of injunctions against Samsung devices.

She will also hear Samsung motions to reduce or dismiss charges and Apple's request for "punitive" damages, which could triple the award.

Friday's ruling -- part of a legal battle in nine countries between the two technology titans -- was seen as a major defeat for smartphone makers that use Google's Android operating system.

More than 90 percent of the latest smartphones from HTC, Lenovo Group, ZTE Corp., Huawei Technologies and LG Electronics use the Android operating platform.

Samsung officials say their company could develop new products or software to avoid being a future target of patent litigation.

Samsung and other smartphone makers are working with Microsoft to launch Windows-based devices later this year. Samsung also has been working with Intel on a free and open mobile platform.

Samsung shares ended 1.27 percent higher at 1,195,000 won Tuesday, a day after plunging 7.5 percent -- the biggest single-day percentage drop the electronics giant has seen in nearly four years.

-- Dow Jones Newswires contributed to this report --

(AP) ? With Isaac bearing down on New Orleans, the city finds itself at a delicate moment in its rebuilding since Hurricane Katrina struck seven years ago.

Private and government investment is fueling the push to overhaul some of the city's troubled but culturally rich neighborhoods near the French Quarter, where poor families are being replaced as wealthier ones move in. While the city's in a boom and even gentrifying, some question whether it will wither the roots that grew the city's distinctive identity.

"New Orleans is becoming a boutique city like San Francisco," said Gary Clark, a politics professor at Dillard University. "You may see black middle class moving in, but with gentrification there's overwhelmingly white individuals of means who become the new urban pioneers."

The number of whites, although smaller than before Katrina, has grown as an overall percentage from 28 percent to 33 percent of the city's population. The city has its first white mayor since the 1970s, while the City Council now has a majority of white members.

On the flip side, blacks say there's danger that their community will be diminished in a city that owes deep cultural and economic debts to its Afro-Caribbean roots. Since the storm the African-American community has shrunk by about 118,500 people, dropping from about 68 percent of the population to about 60 percent.

"(Blacks) don't see themselves as being a part of the recovery economy and getting real opportunity," said Nolan V. Rollins, the Urban League of Greater New Orleans president.

It's not clear what effect Isaac could have on the city. On Tuesday afternoon, the storm had become a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 75 mph.

Isaac was expected to come ashore near New Orleans by early Wednesday, the seventh anniversary of Katrina's devastating strike on the city.

This winter the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development plans to demolish the last of the New Deal-era public housing still standing in New Orleans ? the 850-unit Iberville complex. It was erected over the slums of what was for a time the nation's only legal red-light district, Storyville.

The demolition is part of a $31 million HUD "choice neighborhoods" project, a concept pushed by the Obama administration across the nation. HUD hopes that by starting the process of gentrification, private investment will follow and the communities will become desirable places for all races and classes to live in.

Linda Couch, a public housing expert at the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, said the new approach "has the elements of success."

Meanwhile, another $4 billion in private and government investment has been pouring into the historic neighborhoods of Iberville and Treme, the hearth of the city's African-American culture.

The 1.4 square miles where much of the redevelopment is occurring has long been known for gumbo, jazz, voodoo and civil rights pioneers. Immigrants from around the world lived side by side with blacks in Treme and Iberville, where Louis Armstrong once walked the streets and delivered coal as a boy.

But the entire area fell on hard times after the 1960s, as whites moved to the suburbs and bad urban planning took its toll. By the time Katrina hit, it was struggling and looked like an urban desert of blight, drugs and abandonment in many areas.

The plan for redeveloping the area could include the removal of a noisy concrete interstate expressway that runs through Treme with the hope of restoring what was one of the city's main streets for black commerce. Work is already underway to turn an unused rail corridor into a miles-long walking and bike path called the Lafitte Greenway, turning old schools into new charters and opening "fresh-food" supermarkets.

Taking down the Iberville housing complex is crucial, planners say, to connect Treme with the downtown's theater and business district on Canal Street.

"I think we can retain the soul of New Orleans and in fact enhance it by going through this process," said David Gilmore, a HUD housing expert leading the planning effort.

Many residents see a chance to save neighborhoods that have fallen prey to drugs, poverty and blight.

"We're happy if someone moves down the street into a blighted property," said Jennifer Jones, the self-styled "queen of the second-line" and member of a Treme family of musicians. "No one's angry about whites moving in. When we grew up, there was a lot of mixing going on," Jones said.

But others are apprehensive.

"Maybe they've got their reason," said Lionel Glenn, a 69-year-old retired laborer who ended up at Iberville after another project he was in was torn down after Katrina. "I'd like to stay, but I've got to move."

A recent article in a black community newspaper, The New Orleans Tribune, blared: "They're here" in referring to whites looking to buy up inner-city property. The headline read: "Gentrification: The New Segregation."

Unlike the other redevelopments after Katrina, HUD promises to find housing for all the 440 families at Iberville within about 1 mile of the project.

After Katrina, most of the city's projects were torn down quickly and families were dispersed across the nation. Advocates charged that policy forced poor families out of New Orleans. Public housing units were cut in half at those complexes.

"What has happened is exactly what many people predicted would happen," said Lance Hill, who runs the Southern Institute for Education and Research, a race relations center at Tulane University. "Blacks have ended up in apartments ringing the city."

Mayor Mitch Landrieu says there is no reason to fear the redevelopment.

"We're building it back better than it ever was before and the way it always should have been."

In Treme, there are about 200 more white households than before Katrina, Census data shows. Newcomers and old-timers have clashed, even at times over the noise from the impromptu second-lines, the cherished musical parades, which routinely break out. Also, longtime residents worry about the closing of neighborhood bars.

"They are looking for a French Quarter look-a-alike but with a bedroom community feel," said Al Jackson, a Treme resident and historian.

One newcomer is David Williams, a 49-year-old school administrator. He bought an historic home that for now he rents out. The last batch he rented to was a group of young people with Americorps.

Once their son leaves home, he and his wife have talked about moving into the city and living in the house they've bought.

"In 10 years (this neighborhood) is going to look like Treme does a block away from the French Quarter," he said.

Short- and mid-term cardiovascular effects of Japan's 2011 earthquake and tsunami: Incidence rises with the seismic peak

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? The Japanese earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011, which hit the north-east coast of Japan with a magnitude of 9.0 on the Richter scale, was one of the largest ocean-trench earthquakes ever recorded in Japan. The tsunami caused huge damage, including 15,861 dead and 3018 missing persons, and, as of 6 June 2012, 388,783 destroyed homes.

Following an investigation of the ambulance records made by doctors in the Miyagi prefecture, close to the epicentre of the earthquake and where the damage was greatest, cardiologist Dr Hiroaki Shimokawa and colleagues from the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine at Sendai, Japan, found that the weekly occurrence of five conditions -- heart failure, acute coronary syndrome (including unstable angina and acute MI), stroke, cardio-pulmonary arrest and pneumonia -- all increased sharply soon after the earthquake occurred.

Such reactions -- in ACS, stroke and pulmonary embolism -- have been reported before, said Dr Shimokawa, in Japan, China and the USA. However, these studies reported only the short-term occurrence of individual CVD events, and the mid-term CVD effects of such great earthquakes remain to be elucidated. To this end, the study examined all ambulance transport records in the Miyagi prefecture from 11 February to 30 June for each year from 2008 to 2011 (ie, four weeks before to 16 weeks after 11 March, a total of 124,152 records). Incidence records from before, during and after the earthquake disaster were compared, the aftershocks counted and recorded according to a seismic intensity of 1 or greater.

The number of aftershocks in the Miyagi prefecture was frequent during the six weeks after the earthquake, and the second peak was noted as a large aftershock on 7 April 2011 (magnitude of 7.0). Compared with the previous three years, the significant increases in the occurrence of heart failure and pneumonia were steadily prolonged for more than six weeks after the tsunami struck. On the other hand, the incident increases in stroke and cardio-pulmonary arrest followed the pattern of the first and aftershock seismic peaks. The rapid increases in the occurrence of acute coronary syndromes and cardio-pulmonary arrest was followed by a sharp and significant decline. Interestingly, said Dr Shimokawa, age, sex or residence area did not significantly affect the occurrences of CVD during or following the tsunami.

"To the best of our knowledge," he added, "this is the first report to describe the mid-term course of major cardiovascular events and pneumonia after a great earthquake in a large population. In particular, our findings provide the first evidence that the incidence of heart failure was markedly increased over a long period afterwards." Prevalence of pneumonia, a well known risk factor for deteriorating heart failure, was significantly increased.

The Tohoku University study also found -- as reflected in self-monitoring measurements -- that blood pressure was significantly elevated after the Earthquake. However, transport disruption following the tsunami interrupted delivery of regular medications, such as antihypertensive or antithrombotic drugs, and this may have contributed to the increased cardiovascular events. There was also an increase in the occurrences of ventricular tachyarrhythmias in patients with implantable cardiac defibrillators.

"Taken together," said Dr Shimokawa, "we consider that discontinuation of drugs, activated sympathetic nervous system, rising blood pressure, and the increased occurrence of tachyarrhythmia and infections were all involved in the increased occurrence of cardiovascular events after the Great Earthquake of Japan."

Dreena Burton's Plant-Powered Lunchbox Solutions

GD Star Rating
loading...

Vegan Coconut Banana muffinsThis post is excerpted from Dreena Burton?s Plant-Powered Kitchen. For the entire article, with lots more tips and photos, go to Vegan Children at School and Packing Plant-Powered Lunches.?Here are some great ideas for lunch meals you can prepare for your children.

Wraps. Wraps are easy for the kids to eat, and can be filled with ?ingredients, such as baked beans, refried beans, chickpeas, lentils and other beans, corn, chopped or grated raw veggies], whole grains, and/or ?chopped leftover baked or roasted potatoes. Also, wraps are a good way to sneak in veggies they might not otherwise eat, plus other nutritional add-ins such as tahini and nutritional yeast. ?Use whole-grain tortillas, nori, or ? if your kids are green leafy stars ? wrap fillings in kale or collard leaves.

Bean Dips ? and yes, Hummus! Typically I make triple (or quadruple) batches of hummus, and freeze one or more containers. Hummus?(more recipes in my books too)?thaws brilliantly ? just takes a little time ? so give this time-saver tip a try. ?Not just for dipping with pitas and ?veggies, hummus can also be used in sandwiches as a spread, in wraps, as a layer on pizzas to hold veggies, or even mixed with grains such as rice or into pasta. Hummus is truly a lunch lifesaver. Make it your friend (and make it yourself; it?s much cheaper and far tastier).

?PB&J?. ?I doubt any schools still allow peanut butter. But some allow nuts, and if not, seeds are usually permitted. So, try different nut and seed butters in sandwiches. ?Since seed butters can be bitter, try adding ground cinnamon to make them naturally sweeter, and a splash of pure maple syrup. dAlso, look into organic soy nut butter spreads? there are even varieties that contain cocoa, for a special treat. Use with whole-grain breads, crisp breads, pitas, tortillas, etc.

Soups and Stews: Soups make a hearty, satisfying lunch for your kids. If you didn?t get to batch-cooking on the weekend, there are some wholesome store-bought alternatives that are also timesavers. I often like to add some cooked beans or whole grains to these soups, to boost the nutritional value. ?I have many hearty soups in my books. ?Some kiddo faves are One While Chick Soup and Mellow Sniffle Lentil Soup from?Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan, and Tomato Lentil Soup with Cumin and Fresh Dill?(doesn?t sound kid-friendly, but is!) and ?Kids? Cheesy Chickpea and White Beans Soup? in Let Them Eat Vegan?(and more examples to follow).

Sauce It Up!: ?Kids love to dip and dunk, so send small containers with lids filled with some of their fave sauces, like tahini or other seed/nut-based sauce, tomato sauce, ?KD Dip?, or a homemade sauce/salad dressing, or maybe a container with nutritional yeast for sprinkling! ?Our girls love nutritional yeast mixed with tahini sauce? whatever works, right? ?And, our girls do not really love pasta (tomato) sauce. ?But, if I add in a splash of balsamic vinegar, they enjoy it much more! ?All these sauces can also be used to mix into whole grains or pasta, along with veggies/seeds/beans/tofu, etc. As I often say ?a sauce makes a meal?!

Grain Bowls: Much like how most vegan restaurants have a ?Buddha Bowl?, you can make something similar for lunches. ?This is where batch-cooking comes in handy. ?Cook more grains than you need for a given meal, so you have extra stored in the fridge during the week. Start with a whole grain/pseudo-grain ? quinoa, millet, brown rice, wild rice, etc ? and add in fave veggies (I use frozen peas a lot ? simply thaw in a bowl of boiled water, then drain and toss in) ? or even fruits like chopped grapes or berries, along with any other nutrient-dense add-ins like hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, beans, tempeh cubes, etc. ?Here is where you can add some of those zippy sauces! ?Pack in a sealed container with a fork/spoon ? read to go!

Pasta with peas by Dreena BurtonPasta Bowls: Much of what you can do with a grain bowl works equally well for leftover pasta. ?I always cook extra pasta (either whole-wheat, kamut, or brown rice), and store in a container in the fridge. ?When making lunches, the pasta will be a little tough/chewy after refrigerating (especially brown rice pasta). ?Simply place in a big bowl, cover with boiled water, then drain after a minute. ?It will soften the pasta again, and also make it more amenable to coating with sauces/seasonings. ?If find the cut shapes (rotini, penne, etc) work best for lunches, easier and neater for little ones to eat than long noodles like spaghetti.

Veggies: ?If you kiddo is really picky about veggies, try grating them fine ? very fine? or mincing in a mini-food processor until almost a pulp, and mixing INTO dips, spreads, nut butters, tofu or chickpea sandwich mashes, or into those grain bowls, pasta dishes, wraps, and more. Yeah, they might notice them ? but they will be too tiny to pick out, and if they like the overall flavor of the dish, they will eat it. ?And, if added to a pasta with other items they love (dried fruit, tamari roasted chickpeas, tofu cubes), they will more likely accept!

"momelet" by dreena burtonBreakfast Foods: Some children love to have some breakfast foods like pancakes, french toast, tofu scrambles, or ?momelets? in their lunchboxes. ?If you prepare a batch or two on the weekend, it can carry you over two or more lunches during the week. ?Momelet?photo by Ricki Heller ? Diet, Dessert and Dogs.

Savory sandwiches. If you have leftover grilled or baked tofu, pulse it through a mini-food processor and then mix in chopped veggies and condiments and use as a sandwich filling. Or simply use slices in sandwiches, with a tahini spread, hummus, or other condiment to hold the tofu in place. Chickpeas can be mashed or pureed and again mixed with veggies and condiments for a hearty sandwich filling, and one that looks not much different from the egg or tuna sandwiches other kids might be eating. Grilled cheese sandwiches are a favorite, and you can use any vegan cheese you prefer, or a nut or seed cheese in place of a commercial vegan cheese. Let cool before packing, and include a small container of ketchup for dipping. If your child is a true veggie lover, make simple sandwiches with chopped, sliced, or grated fresh veggies. ?Use whole grain/sprouted breads, or whole-grain pitas or bagels.

Fruit: Fresh fruit is an obvious choice, especially easy-to-eat fruit such as grapes, strawberries, and orange segments. But others such as cubed melon, plums, kiwi wedges (the kids can eat them like an orange), and half a mango (scored) are welcome changes. Also try replacing raisins with other dried fruit such as apple slices, mango, or apricots. Choose unsulfured and organic whenever possible.

Baked Goods: I am always doing double batches of some variety of muffin, mini-muffin, healthy cookie, snack bar, etc. ?I give many examples at the end of this post of recipes from my books. Coconut Banana Muffins (becoming very popular! See photo at top of post) from Let Them Eat Vegan.

Store-bought items. Lunches and snacks are made even easier with a few prepared items: healthier granola bars, dairy-free yogurts, whole organic fruit bars, unsweetened applesauce cups, crackers, and other more natural snacks. ?And, while foods like Daiya cheese, cheese spreads, and veggie dogs are more processed, there is nothing wrong with incorporating them occasionally, especially on those joyous ?hot lunch? days! I particularly like the Wayfare brand of cheese spread. ?It is oat-based, the ingredients are not from some science experiment, and it works really well for a sandwich/wrap spread to ?hold? other ingredients when you are plum out of hummus! ?(hmmm, plum hummus? plummus?) ?I?ll stop.

Nibbly Bites: ?Kids love finger foods, so things like beans (for our kids, that means Tamari Roasted Chickpeas, Cinnamon Tortilla Strips, Softly Spiced Nuts (if nuts permitted, or you could sub seeds and dried fruit in this recipe), small bites of tofu, tempeh strips?(I simply bake these in the toaster oven on a parchment-lined tray until lightly browned), or seitan, sheets of nori, seaweed snacks, raw crackers, or whole-grain/raw cereals.?Kaia has a line of raw snacks, and some may be just right for your lunchboxes, like ?salt and vinegar pumpkin seeds?!

Local Search for Your Small Business, is it All You Need?

A local hair salon was not getting calls. Their phone was not ringing. New clients were not coming in. A decision was made to try something. Their online local directory listing was claimed, corrected, and optimized. Suddenly their phone started ringing and new customers started coming in. The owner commented that she might have to add more employees to handle the increase in customer traffic. This is a true story.

Local Search MapWhat is Local Search?
Before talking about why you need Local Search let?s define it. According to Wikipedia, Local Search is the use of Search Sites by people searching for local businesses. The search is geographically constrained by adding a location word such as city and state, or zip code.

Wikipedia goes on to say that there are two types of local search. Explicit and implicit. An explicit search is done with a location term. An example of an explicit local search would be shoe stores in raleigh nc. An example of an implicit search would be restaurant. A search for restaurants is implicit because the word is typically used by itself when people are searching for a local restaurant. But how does the search engine know which city to search for with an implicit search? It uses the physical location of the person doing the search. This is usually known by the search site based on the technical information about the computer and it?s connection to the internet.

Local search results are different than non local search results. A local search generates a page that includes businesses from an online business directory. These business directory listings would not show for a non local search. The search engine is making a decision on whether the person is looking for local products or services or not. In the latter case the search could be for research or some other need that does not require a list of local business products or services.

A business directory listing is the basic contact information for a business that exists in a directory. There are many online business directories. Each search engine has one. The online business directory is used for local search and with maps. It is not used with non local search.

When someone clicks on a business directory listing they are taken to the business?s website if the website address has been supplied in the directory listing. If the business has not filled in their own business directory listing with their website address the visitors are taken to the actual business directory information.

Who Needs Local Search?
Back to the main topic about the need for Local Search. If your business sells products or services to local customers, and if your local customers sometimes use the Internet to find what they are looking for, then you need to pay attention to local search.

A Free Opportunity
Local search offers a huge opportunity for businesses and organizations to attract website visitors. It can even help you if you don?t have a website. However, having a website can help your local business directory rank better. A consumer may be simply looking for a phone number for any local flower shop. When searching for flower shops (a local search) that person may see the phone number on the business listing in the search results page and call that number without even clicking to the flower shop website.

Does Your Business have Local Competition?
The challenge that businesses face is the same challenge they face elsewhere. Competition. In this case the challenge is to get your business directory listing ranking above your competitors. The top spot is the best. Each step lower gets fewer clicks, and thus, fewer leads, fewer calls, and fewer customers. If your business directory does not show on page one you won?t see much benefit at all. Few people check listings after page one.

As a business owner you need local search to work for you. You need your business directory listing to show up on the first page of search results for the most common terms that people use when searching for your type of business. You don?t need your website to show on page one when people 800 miles away are searching for local (local for them) products or services.

As an example, if you own an auto body shop you would want your business directory listing to show on page one (page one of search results when someone is searching) when the search term auto body shop in yourcityname is used. You should not try to get your website to show up in search results when someone searches for auto body shop. Of course it might be nice if you could get this to happen. The reality is that it would take a huge amount of time and money. It may be next to impossible. There is little value for you if non local people are finding your website but cannot do business with you.

How to take advantage of Local Search
Now that you know what local search is and why it?s important, you need to know how to make it work for you. Your business must be listed in the major online directories such as Google Places (now called Google + Local), Bing, Yahoo, CitySearch, FourSquare and others.

If your business is at least one year old it may already be listed in many of the online directories. However, you need to claim your listing and fill it in with accurate information. Unclaimed listings contain very little content and often times incomplete and inaccurate information.

Helpful Tools
A helpful tool to get you started is www.getlisted.org. Simply enter your business name and your zip code and it will show you where your business is listed. It will also help you get started by supplying the links to claim your business listing on many important directories.

Another excellent tool is at www.whitespark.ca/local-citation-finder. It helps identify related search terms that people use to search for your type of business. It also finds websites that your business contact information is listed.

Local Search Optimization Tips
Here?s a valuable tip to get you started. Find and claim your Google Plus Local page. Add your business to the directory if you cannot find it. Fill in all the information including your website domain name. Make sure your business contact information is correct and is exactly the same as indicated on your website. Add a review to your Plus Local page.

Local search is important. It?s a huge opportunity offered to you by the search sites. It?s used by a large number of people searching for local products and services. Take advantage of this free gift. It can make a huge difference in your business!

Ryan Lochte's Sister Apologizes for Racist Video

Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte may be a national treasure, but his family is a bit of an embarrassment. Last week, a 2008 video made its way around the internet, in which Ryan's sister Megan spends four-and-a-half minutes making fun of Chinese people. She has since apologized for the video -- but is the damage already done? Watch the controversial clip below (warning: offensive language).

Smoky Pulled Pork Tacos with Cherry-Peach Salsa (Crock Pot ...

While Ben and I have the same views on important matters like family, religion, money management, and hugging, we have to laugh at how opposite we are regarding other parts of our lives.

He loves to skateboard, while I prefer to play tennis.

I?m a coffee drinking early bird, and he?s a hip hop listening night owl.

He hates heights, while I want to jump out of airplanes.

Fly/drive. Summer/winter. Cake/pie. I could go on for days, people!

Fortunately, opposites do, in fact, attract, and while I don?t think we quite knew what to do about these differences in the beginning of our relationship, hysterical laughter is the new norm when proclaiming in coincidental unison our opposite love or hate for a person/place/thing while watching tv, or out-and-about, which happens at least once a day. What else can you do but giggle and agree to disagree?

Luckily I also totally married up and have a husband who will chase after my misdirected tennis balls ?til blinded by sweat, lay with me when I fall asleep at 8pm, fly next to me over oceans, hold my hand in the sweltering heat when I need to hear the cicadas at night, and stuff cake in his face just to make me laugh.

The whole jumping out of an airline bit though? Non negotiable. I can?t get through to the man! ;)

Opposites also tastefully attract in food, which is easily proven by Smoky Pulled Pork Tacos with Cherry-Peach Salsa.

SmokyPulledPorkTacoswithCherryPeachSalsa

Smoky chipotle pepper-laced pulled pork combines with sweet cherry-peach salsa in a juicy taco that Ben and I both agreed is absolutely mouthwatering. And I quote, ?This is the best thing you?ve made in a long time.? followed by, ?Omg I can?t wait to shove this in my mouth.? regarding his second taco, and ?I?ve never had juicier pork in my life.? Cough,?TWSS, x2. BAHAHAOMG, I can?t even!

DSC_0359

These tacos were made even better due to the fact that they were cooked in the crock pot. All I had to do was throw everything in the crocker at night, set it on the base in the morning, then turn it on. The fresh, summery Cherry-Peach Salsa can also be made a couple days ahead of time, which means dinner can be on the table in the time it takes you to shred the pork. Love that!

DSC_0364

Start the pulled pork tacos by assembling and prepping the ingredients for the pulled pork.

DSC_0308

First slice 1 large onion into quarters, then separate the layers into the bottom of the crock pot. I used a 5 quart crock pot, btw, which fits this recipe beautifully.

Next, address zee butt. A 4-5lb pork butt! Pork butt is actually pork shoulder ? a fact I recently learned after an incredibly confusing conversation between me and my aforementioned husband regarding a requested shoulder rub in which he kept saying, yeah I?ll rub your butt! Right. Moving on!

FIRST cut the pork into 5 or 6 big hunks, then liberally season each piece with salt & pepper. Per the pictures below, I forgot to cut the pork and put it in whole before removing and cutting up. Leaving it whole would have cost me hours in additional cooking time!

Next add a few ingredients that will make the pulled pork taste wonderfully smokey, with a hint of sweet: 4 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, 2 Tablespoons adobo sauce, 1/2 cup BBQ sauce, 2 Tablespoons brown sugar (un-pictured) and 20oz Dr. Pepper.

Chipotle peppers are smoked jalapeno peppers and are more?smoky?than spicy, in my opinion. You can get cans of them packed in adobo sauce right in the international foods aisle. I generally only use 1 or 2 per recipe, then stash the leftovers in my freezer.

Pop the top onto the crock pot then either stash it in the fridge overnight and place it on the base in the morning, or put it onto the base now and cook on low for 8 hours.

Now, as I mentioned, not only can the pulled pork be prepped in advance, but the sweet Cherry-Peach Salsa that goes on top can be made up to 2 days ahead of time too!

To 1 cup each fresh chopped cherries & peaches, add 1/4 cup chopped cilantro, 1 minced jalapeno, the juice of 1 lime, and a dash of salt.

Mix everything together, then try to save some for the tacos. This is one of my favorite fruit salsas to date, and is seriously delicious on it?s own.

When the pork is cooked through, and fall apart-tender, shred it all up, place it into a bowl, then strain the juices from the crock pot through 2 layers of cheesecloth, and enough of it back in to cover.

Spoon the juicy pork onto a few fajita-sized flour tortillas, top with the cold cherry-peach salsa, then devour!

Smoky Pulled Pork Tacos with Cherry-Peach Salsa

Print this recipe!

Serves 6-8

Pulled Pork Tacos slightly adapted from The Pioneer Woman

Ingredients:

For the pork:

4-5lb pork butt (may be called pork shoulder)

salt & pepper

1 large sweet onion

4 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce + 2 Tablespoons sauce

1/2 cup BBQ sauce

2 Tablespoons brown sugar

20oz Dr. Pepper

Fajita-sized flour quesadillas

For the Cherry-Peach Salsa:

1 cup chopped sweet cherries

1 cup chopped peaches (about 1 large peach)

1/4 cup chopped cilantro

1 jalapeno, minced

salt

juice of 1 lime

Directions:

1. Cut onion into quarters then separate layers into the bottom of a 5 quart (minimum size) crock pot. Trim pork butt of excess fat then cut into 4-6 large pieces and season well with salt & pepper. Lay seasoned pork on top of onions then add chipotle peppers, adobo sauce, BBQ sauce, brown sugar, and Dr. Pepper. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or until pork is tender enough to easily shred with a fork.

2. Remove pork pieces from the crock pot and shred, then place into a bowl and set aside. Strain juices through a double layer of cheesecloth and add back to shredded pork. Serve with Cherry-Peach Salsa in flour tortillas.

3. For the Cherry-Peach Salsa: Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Make up to two days in advance.

I was afraid the pork would be too sweet with the addition of BBQ sauce, Dr. Pepper and brown sugar, but it was perfect. Definitely not too sweet, because, wouldn?t you know it ? while I love sweet & savory dinners, Ben?s all savory, all the time. Sweets are for dessert! Which he also doesn?t like. Come on! ;)

DSC_0379

I also originally wanted to make just a cherry salsa to top the tacos with, as a wink and a nod to Cherry Dr. Pepper, but I?m so glad I threw chopped peaches in there too. Their scent and flavor is just outrageous right now, and guess what? Even though Ben?s a savory guy, he LOVED the fruity salsa. That?s a major win, people!

DSC_0368

Knock the chipotle peppers and adobo sauce down a bit if you are sensitive to heat but as is, the heat level is only about a 5/10, and the cherry-peach salsa helped tone it down too!

Do you and your mate have opposite interests, or are you pretty similar? What do you like to do together?

While we definitely have a lot of opposite interests, Ben and I like driving in the country, planning for our future, cooking, and going out to eat together!
