Health, Fitness and Wellness assesment | Haakon's Blog

What is Health? What is fitness? What are the components of Health Related Fitness? How can and why should you test your fitness? What types of fitness test have you used? How can we compare our results with other people? ?How did you do these tests? What are some of the problems of using the BMI as a standard test?

Health is a very large part of our lives as it will effect how long we live and the illnesses we might face. Being healthy is both being physically and mentally fit. You do not need to be skinny nor muscular to be physically healthy. It means to be balancing your life in the right way. That can be eating a balanced meal, balanced body?composition or being able to relise and improve the parts of your body you need to work on. Only being physically fit doesn?t make you fully healthy. Mental health is also a important part. Staying on a positive attitude, balancing the amount of time needed to work and rest, staying relaxed(not stressed) and keeping a good relationship with people is as?equivalent?as being?physically?healthy. This link?shows a man who is fit both mentally and?physically. He mentions that he is the only member of the family that is not addicted to drugs or any negative harms to our bodies. He keeps a?positive?attitude as he is currently running a free give back program to give kids a chance to dance. He might not look healthy but he actually is. He is dancing because he wanted to find a way to not harm his body in a negative way. As he is now a pro dancer and is suffering no illnesses.

Fitness is being healthy and being able to physically improve the 5 components of fitness. Cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, body composition and flexibility. It is never about being thin or fat. Its about if your body can deal with everyday life tasks in a higher difficulty.

The 5?components?of health related fitness is:

1. Cardiovascular endurance

2. Muscular Strength

3. Muscular endurance

4. Body composition

5. Flexibility

One way we tested our health was by doing the Cooper test. The Cooper test allowed us to see how many laps we can do in a?curtain?amount of time. Doing this test it is simple to see the improvement. If we do this often, we can see the improvement by seeing how many laps we increased by. Another way to test our health is by doing many types of fitness tests. It can be how many burpees we can do to test our cardiovascular endurance. How many push-ups we can do to test our muscular endurance. How high we can jump to test our muscular strength. Measuring the weight and height our body to find out our body composition. Finally the flexibility test to see how far we can reach sitting down. The BMI test is a way to see if the ration between the height and weight is matching. We should test ourselves with these fitness tests to see which of the 5?components?we should work on. Testing ourselves many times lets us see how much we have improved and to see the progress you have made to stay fit.

We can compare our results with other people by, putting all the results together into one table making it easy to compare. But it is a good idea to compare your results with the people that has a simular body composition. Another way of comparing is by?categorizing?yourself by looking at a chart that shows if your average, above or below average. This was used when we did the Cooper test when we categorized ourselves by comparing the distance by the chart.

Problems we might face when doing the BMI test is that the average weight for the different heights might vary from each country. In Japan people might have a different image of the average weight. Another problem is that the BMI test records your weight but doesn?t show how many percent of the weight is fat and how much is muscle. The amount of muscle might effect the weight which will maybe make it look like your over-weight but your actually just very muscular.

Overall I think I would of tried harder. A lot of the time i was trying to save energy for after school activities. But I have gain knowledge about different types of muscles in your body and different ways to test ourselves. I believe that my fitness is above average because I do many sports. But i think i can also improve on the flexibility. But as for the other 4 components I think I am strong at. This is the link to the results i got for the fitness test. I have learned and gotten inspired to keep on working on my fitness and to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. I am going to do this by working on each aspect of the components and by trying to balance out my day more. I think the cardiovascular endurance is important to my fitness as i do soccer and basketball which requires a lot of stamina. Cardiovascular endurance will let me run more on the field and to participate more on the game.

Over the next three months i am going to make myself 3 goals to follow for fitness development.

1. I am going to ?run every morning during the weekend to improve my cardiovascular endurance. I am going to run a set route every weekend so that i can measure my speed?every time?and see how much i have improved for every run. I will know i have reached my goal when i have 32 results on my table that will be made on the computer.

2. I am going to do as many push-ups as i can do in 1 minute, every second day. My goal is to be able to do 50 push-ups in the minute. I will know when i have reached my goal when I do 50 push-ups. I will record how many push-ups i did on the same document as number one to see the progress.

3. It might sound easy but one of my goals is to be able to touch my toes while stretching. Currently i am not flexible enough to be able to touch my toes. To achieve my goal i am going to stretch everyday(preferably in the morning). I will know when i have reached my goal when i am able to touch my toes.
