Atlantic Beach finance meeting turns into screaming match ...

ATLANTIC BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A finance committee meeting in the town of Atlantic Beach quickly turned into a war of words and finger pointing Friday morning.

The town's finance committee, run by Councilwomen Carolyn Cole and Windy Price, called the meeting to address the town's financial struggles and the financial outlook for this year's proposed Bikefest.

"Money that comes into this town does not always get recorded into the bank account. Until that stops Atlantic Beach will continue to have financial problems," said Price.

Cole cited town documents showing nearly $50,000 in missing money from last year's Bikefest. She and Price say that's a prime example why the event needs more financial oversight.

"[From now on] we want [bike week financial reports]to be as detailed as you guys can get it, because if we're going to do this we need the money to go back into the town's bank account," said Cole.

Mayor Retha Pierce, Councilman Jake Evans and a few Atlantic Beach residents were in attendance. Pierce and Evans chattered about what they say is the improper procedures by which Cole ran the meeting.

Cole at one point during the meeting entertained the idea of public comment and then decided it was unnecessary, which sparked outrage from Pierce and Evans. What followed was a three-minute screaming match between Pierce, Evans and Cole.

Pierce and Evans claimed Cole was trying to conduct business that requires the input of the entire council within the finance committee. Cole says she's just doing the job the finance committee was tasked with.

The entire council will meet at the Atlantic Beach Community Center on Monday at 10 a.m. That regularly schedule council meeting is of course open to the public.
