Rep. Wood Proposes Community Services for Young Adults with ...

State Rep. Terrie Wood (R-141) delivered compelling testimony for H.B. 6001. The bill was inspired and conceptualized by constituents.

One of the constituents, John Lowman, testified alongside Rep. Wood. This act would establish a program for supportive and sustainable residential community called Green Hills Farm for young adults with developmental disabilities, including but not limited to, autism spectrum disorder.

This community would create a safe and nurturing environment where adults with developmental disabilities can live, work and develop lasting friendships in an integrated working community.

This community would be dramatically different from institutions because the residents will not be treated as members of a thriving community.?

Many of the residents that would qualify for this community are already on the waiting list for Group Homes with the Department of Social Services (DSS).

In addition, 75% are unemployed but are able to work. The program that Rep. Wood proposes would rectify both of these issues by providing potential residents to work and live in a community setting with a strong support system and highly capable staff.

This would be a permanent residency for young adults to enter after they age out of the school system at 21 and remain in for the rest of their lives.?

?Green Hills Farm is just what this state needs. Not only does it fill the gap for those unable to get into Group Homes, but it provides a wonderful and caring atmosphere.

The property will be ?Green? certified and use sustainable resources. It will also provide a stimulating and therapeutic environment for all residents. Additionally, they will gain the fulfillment of being employed,? Wood said.?

Rep. Wood presented her bill before the Public Health Committee on Wednesday afternoon. You can track the action on this bill by visiting http://www.cga.ct.gov/ and typing in H.B. 6001.
