Virender Sehwag dropped for remaining Australia Tests - Cricket News Update

Experienced Indian opener Virender Sehwag has been dropped for the remaining two Tests of the four-match home series against Australia, owing to his struggling form. Senior off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who has also been struggling to regain his peak form, has however been retained in the squad.

The Sanjay Jagdale led BCCI selection panel, however decided against picking up a replacement for the right-handed top-order batsman, which means Shikhar Dhawan will most probably open the innings for the hosts with Murali Vijay in the third Test, starting in Mohali on March 14. Vijay, meanwhile, has cemented his place in the squad after scoring a gritty ton in the second Test in Hyderabad.

This is the first time the Delhi dasher has been dropped for a Test since making a resounding comeback to the Test format of the game with a century in Adelaide in 2008-09. That, incidentally, remains Sehwag?s last Test century outside subcontinent. The hard-hitting Indian batsman, who scored a hundred in the opening Test against England in November last year, has failed to fire in his last nine innings, returning with figures of 25, 30, 9, 23, 49, 0, 2, 19 and 6. He has scored just 27 runs in his three innings in the ongoing Test series against Australia, which the hosts lead 2-0.

Respecting national selectors? decision, Sehwag said that he will continue to work hard and hoped to regain his place in the Test side soon.

"Will continue to work hard for my place in the team. I trust my game and am confident that, 'I'll be back.' Best wishes to the team," tweeted Sehwag - who had been dropped from the ODI squad for the series against England in January this year.

Barring Sehwag's omission, there were no other changes in the squad for the final two Tests to be held in Mohali (March 14 to 18) and Delhi (March 22 to 26) respectively.

India squad for 3rd and 4th Test: MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), M Vijay, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Dinda, Cheteshwar Pujara.
