OVERLAND PARK, Kan. ? Finding the money to pay for a pet?s emergency surgery is often the furthest thing from people?s minds, but when furry family members get hurt or sick, it?s hard for many to imagine not helping them.? However, many families have to face those decisions every day.? Can we afford to save our pet or do we have to say goodbye?

One seven year-old girl wants to make that decision easier.

Sydney Riley met Nutmeg at an animal hospital.? Her job was just to provide love for new puppies.? One showed an interest in return.

?She came up to me and sat in my lap.? She was the first one to do that.? That?s why I liked her so much, and she was cute,? Sydney said of her dog, Nutmeg.

Months after Nutmeg became part of the family she became very sick.

?Sometimes I was afraid she might die,? Sydney said.

?We took her in, they did an X-ray, and they said your dog needs surgery,? Amanda Riley, Sydney?s Mom said.

If Nutmeg didn?t have surgery, she?d die.

?We were obviously very concerned about her and also wondering how in the world we would come up with the money,? Amanda explained.

After scrambling to get enough, the money came through, but days later, Nutmeg needed another surgery.

?There was a period of about 20 minutes where we weren?t sure if we were going to be able to pull it off,? Amanda said.

Once again, Nutmeg was able to have life-saving surgery, but both surgeries were about ten thousand dollars.

She?s never had a sick pet before, but Sydney?s been collecting money for two years to help families who can?t afford emergency procedures for their pets, her fund is called Sydney?s S.H.A.R.E.

Nutmeg?s doctor says funds like Sydney?s S.H.A.R.E. are literally life-savers.

?She?s just an amazing, amazing girl that I think is gonna do great things,? said Dr. Kara Forsee from Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners.

Sydney now knows first-hand how much her cause helps others.

?I feel good that I am helping other families so that they don?t have to go through what we had to,? she said.

Each year she?s collected more than 400 dollars for families in need, and hopes to raise even more.

Nutmeg still isn?t out of the woods, for the next week or so, she still risks having deadly complications.
