Condensing Vs. Non-Condensing Furnace

A few years back, the Department of Energy in the United States began enforcing a law that required furnace manufacturers to create furnace heating systems that carried at least an 80% AFUE rating. Many homeowners upgraded their systems, and some were still able to get away with installing another non-condensing furnace that was 80% efficient rather than a condensing furnace that was 90% efficient of more. These homeowners didn?t want to shovel out another few hundred dollars for a high efficiency system and decided to go with the minimum requirement. Unfortunately, the requirements are about to change again, and non-condensing furnaces are on their way out the door?permanently!

• Non-Condensing Furnaces: Non-condensing furnaces waste your money as they waste energy. Older non-condensing furnaces are often less than 75% efficient with the energy they consume because they do not condense the byproducts of combustion into usable heat for the home. This adds up to more fuel consumption in your home than necessary and consequently, a higher gas bill as well!

• Condensing Furnaces: Combustion gases and water are the byproducts of combustion that can be condensed and reused to create extra heat before exhaustion from the home. This process is what give a furnace the ability to reach high AFUE ratings and the result is more money in your wallet and less carbon emissions from the home.

When it comes down to it, your non-condensing furnace is not going to last forever, and the next time you replace it, the laws here in the northern part of the United States are going to require that you upgrade to a high efficiency condensing furnace.
