7 Internships in the Arts With Housing: Admin, Graphics, Teaching, Gallery, Ceramics
Summer 2013: View has internship positions available for college students or recent graduates interested in gaining hands on experience. Interns will receive practical training in arts programming, day-to-day operations in a fast-paced environment, and working with a small, committed staff and dedicated volunteers in a brand new green building.
All Interns responsibilities will include:
Assisting with benefits and fundraisers, preparation and distribution of promotional materials, and various administrative tasks and errands. Interns may assist in more than one area depending on their abilities and interests, but are designated to specific areas. Interns with skills in illustration, graphics, video, or photography may be given opportunities to build their portfolios. If qualified, interns may have the opportunity to teach a workshop. Exhibition installation, take down and communication with visitors and associates are all part of the summer responsibilities. Excellent computer and communication skills are a must. Interns are expected to work 40+ hours a week. Some nights and weekends are required.
Workshop Assistants (2):
View offers an outstanding array of interesting, diverse, and fun workshops and classes for adults, teens, and children including pottery, fine arts, fiber and basketry, theater, culinary, and jewelry. The Interns will provide support to the, instructors and students.??Tasks include administrative responsibilities, room preparation and organization, and database management. Interns will also organize and manage a morning children?s program in July and August as well as weekly Tie Dye and Paint On Pottery Classes. This position requires Interns who are creative, have lots of energy, have strong computer skills, and are comfortable working with children and adults.
Events Intern:
The Events Intern will work closely with the Events Manager of View on a daily basis. Intern is responsible for planning, implementing and participating in any events during internship. Responsibilities will include answering phones, email correspondence, research, assisting with planning of special events, including meeting with event committees, developing community resources, event mailings, logistical tasks, and generating new ideas. Special projects will include art focused festivals, auctions, receptions, weddings, and other social events. Many of these take place in our 3000 square foot performing arts space and some will be off premises or even outdoors. One of the intern?s primary functions will be to prepare and implement View?s annual Gala that takes place in early August. We will give the intern experience on planning events from concept to completion. We are looking for someone who is very organized, detail oriented, who can multitask, with an up-beat personality. Experience with budgeting, planning, design, decorating, Excel, Word, and people skills are highly desired.
Exhibitions Intern:
View presents a diverse range of fine arts exhibitions. The exhibitions assistant will work closely with the Curator in preparing and implementing summer exhibits including the nationally renowned Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors. Database management, creating exhibition materials, maintaining artist relations, and various administrative responsibilities will be required aspects of this position.??Hands on duties will include permanent collection maintenance and archiving, installation of exhibitions, assisting with opening receptions and exhibition-related events, and working directly with artists and exhibition jurors.
Performing Arts Programming Internship:
The performing arts internship provides a unique opportunity for those interested in a career in arts administration and other related fields. View has a 200-seat performance space that presents theatre, music, and dance throughout the year with a high summer concentration. These are usually one-off performances. The intern will assist the Program Manager in all aspects of running and planning a successful program while gaining hands-on experience on the inner workings of a performing arts venue. Interns will assist in daily administrative duties and provide production support before and during performances that include programming, grant writing, box office support, technical production, marketing/public relations, and performer hospitality. Successful candidates should possess excellent organizational and people skills, strong written and verbal communication skills and have a flexible schedule (some nights and weekends required.) The candidate should also have some or all of the following skills; running a light board and/or soundboard, writing press releases, box office recordkeeping, house management, Word, and Excel. Arts Administration, Production, Theater, Dance, Marketing, Music, or Technical Production education/experience preferred. Bring your energy, enthusiasm, and passion for the performing arts.
Graphic Design & Media Intern:
Work with the Graphic Designer/Media Manager to generate graphics and marketing for all programming. The intern will execute several involved projects from the branding stages to execution. Duties include conceptual development, branding, designing various printed materials, updating the website (programming skills not required), writing press releases, social networking, and research. Applicants are required to have their own computer with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign installed.??When applying for this position please specify in your cover letter that you have your own computer with these programs, and attach a portfolio of 5-10 pieces in PDF format or include a link to your online portfolio. Portfolio pieces should reflect digital and hand illustration skills, and include at least one poster. Additional programs or creative abilities such as photography and video are desirable.
Ceramics Intern
The ceramics intern will help to maintain View?s large ceramics studio, assist with ceramics workshops, load, monitor and unload kilns. mix glazes, reclaim and pug clay, and other duties as assigned. The intern will also be involved in fundraising activities including the annual Ice Cream Social. Possible opportunity to teach. Must have experience with studio maintenance and firing.
Stipend & Housing:
Interns are given a stipend of $50 per week. College credits may also be arranged.
Interns are provided optional housing. Some housing is available within walking distance to the center and the conveniences of the village. Interns may attend workshops, events, and performances, free of charge on a space available basis.
