The iTunes App Store is full of apps that promise to get you in shape, help you lose weight and change your life. But with thousands of apps to choose from, finding ones that can actually make a difference is time-consuming and expensive. To help you get more out of your iPhone, here are five of our favorite health and fitness apps.

1. My Fitness Pal Calorie Counter
This app describes itself as the "fastest and easiest-to-use calorie counter" with "the largest food database of any calorie counter (over 1.1 million)." It makes weight management easy by helping you track your calories and set goals based on your height, weight and activity level.

Compatibility: iPod Touch, iPhone
Cost: Free

2. iMapMy
With apps for running, biking and hiking, the iMapMy family allows you to track the length and pace of whatever workout you're into. It has a built-in GPS that can automatically record your pace, speed, elevation and calories burned.

Compatibility: iPod Touch, iPhone, Blackberry, Android
Cost: Free - $2.99

3. Fitness Pro
With more than 450 illustrated exercises, "Fitness Pro" makes creating customized workouts easy. Like the iMapMy apps, Fitness Pro offers the ability to track and map runs. The app's social functions let you share workouts with other users, allowing you to stay connected with workout buddies around the corner and around the world.

Compatibility: iPod Touch, iPhone
Cost: Free

4. Zombies, Run!
"Zombies, Run!" actually makes running fun by creating an immersive world through audio updates between songs in your playlist. In the story, you're running away from a pack of zombies to collect materials that will fortify your home base. Slow down, and you begin to hear the zombies over your music until they catch you. Speed up, and you might make it back alive. The game is expensive for an app, but it delivers plenty of missions, plus free updates released every few months. The app works best when used with the iPhone's GPS, but it can also work for iPod Touch users or treadmill runners through the accelerometer.

Compatibility: iPod Touch, iPhone
Cost: $7.99

5. STACK Attack App
STACK has partnered with Tim Grover, trainer to elite pro athletes like Michael Jordan, Dwyane Wade and Kobe Bryant, to deliver a 12-week workout plan that requires no equipment. The app features 80+ instructional videos and step-by-step instructions to help you get in shape for whatever sport you play.

Compatibility: iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad
Cost: $2.99
