Fedex hiking ground shipping rates almost 5% in 2013

FedEx Corp , the No. 2 U.S. package-delivery company, said on Friday it will raise its average rates for ground shipments and home deliveries by 4.9 percent beginning in January.

The increase reflects a 5.9 percent raise in published rates at FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery, offset by a lower fuel surcharge.

The move comes two weeks after larger rival United Parcel Service Inc disclosed a 4.9 percent hike for its 2013 shipping charges.

Results of both companies in recent months have been pinched by an uncertain global economy, which has ?eaten into the overall volume of goods being shipped and caused customers to choose less expensive shipping methods.

FedEx next month is scheduled to report results for its third fiscal quarter, with analysts braced for a 10 percent drop in per share earnings, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.?

After all, many career experts recommend native speakers practice and practice again for these high-stakes interviews. It behooves?English language learners?to practice, practice, and practice some more for job interviews.

During these difficult economic times, however,? Business English trainers, advanced ESL (English as a Second Language), teachers and VESL (Vocational English as a Second Language) job coordinators should focus on an even wider range of interviewing skills. A photo of a New York City police officer kneeling down to give a barefoot homeless man in Times Square a pair of boots on a cold November night is melting even the iciest New Yorkers' hearts online.

On Nov. 14, NYPD officer Lawrence DePrimo, who was on counterterrorism duty in Times Square, saw the older homeless man without shoes sitting on 42nd street. DePrimo, 25, left and then returned with a pair of $100 boots he bought at a nearby Skechers for the man.

"It was freezing out and you could see the blisters on the man's feet," DePrimo, a three-year veteran of the department who lives with his parents on Long Island, told the New York Times. "I had two pairs of socks and I was still cold."

The random act of kindness was captured by Jennifer Foster, a tourist from Florence, Ariz., who was visiting the city. Foster, communications director for the Pinal County Sheriff's Office in Arizone, emailed the photo to the NYPD with a note commending DePrimo.

"The officer said, 'I have these size 12 boots for you, they are all-weather. Let's put them on and take care of you,'" Foster wrote. "The officer squatted down on the ground and proceeded to put socks and the new boots on this man."

"I have been in law enforcement for 17 years," she continued. "I was never so impressed in my life. ... It is important, I think, for all of us to remember the real reason we are in this line of work. The reminder this officer gave to our profession in his presentation of human kindness has not been lost."

Foster's photo was posted on the NYPD's Facebook page on Tuesday, where it was gathered more than 320,000 "likes," 77,000 "shares" and 20,000 comments--most of them praising DePrimo, who seems to have renewed Facebook's faith in humanity.

"This is one hell of a police officer," Desiree Wright-Borden wrote.

"Wow," Jack Horton wrote. "It's nice to know there are still good people out there."

"Angels truly do walk on earth!!!" Charlene Hoffman-Pestell wrote.

Some commenters, though, were skeptical, saying the photo could have been staged.

"Clever stunt!" Louis Zehmke wrote. "The hobo is 'parked' at the entrance of a shoe shop."

But Foster claims DePrimo had no idea he was being photographed: "The officer expected NOTHING in return and did not know I was watching."

Bloomberg: New York City Homeowners To Get Post-sandy Property ...

New York - New York City homeowners whose houses were severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy will get an extra three months to pay their property taxes and could receive partial refunds under measures announced on Thursday by city officials.

The relief allows homeowners whose property taxes are due on Jan. 1 to delay payment until April 1 with no penalty, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other city officials said in a joint statement.

Homeowners could also get a partial refund of property tax payments due in fiscal year 2013 because of lowered home values, but that measure must be approved by state lawmakers.

With an average expected rebate of $794 for the more than 900 properties eligible, the tab for the city could come to more than $714,000.

Current New York City property tax payments are calculated using assessments made in May 2012. As it swept ashore on Oct. 29, Sandy damaged or destroyed at least 305,000 houses in New York state, according to state estimates.

The city?s finance department said it plans to use post-Sandy property value assessments to calculate tax payments due in fiscal 2014.
