Cal-Ore Achieves 900MHz-Like Coverage in the 3.65GHz Band

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.?(EON: Enhanced Online News)?PureWave Networks announced today that it has been selected by Cal-Ore Communications, Inc. as the company?s supplier of Mobile WiMAX (802.16e) infrastructure. with 16 base stations already deployed, the rapidly growing network currently covers approximately 200 square miles and a population of approximately 50,000 in rural California and Oregon, bringing broadband services to business and residents of rural communities. In addition to advanced broadband service packages, offering aggregate speeds of up to 12Mbps, Cal-Ore also plans to offer phone services over the network and to expand the coverage area in the coming months.

Operating in the semi-licensed 3.65GHz band, Cal-Ore is using PureWave?s Quantum 6636 base stations to replace obsolete and much slower network equipment that operates in the 900MHz and 2.4GHz bands. ?When we began to roll-out 3.65GHz equipment one of our main concerns was maximizing the coverage area,? said Charles Boening, Cal-Ore?s Network Manager. ?After-all, the reason operators are still using old, slow equipment in the noisy 900MHz band is because of the band?s supposedly superior propagation characteristics. however, we were excited to discover that using PureWave?s gear we were able to achieve similar coverage in the 3.65GHz band as we were seeing with our legacy 900MHz equipment but deliver up to 5 times the capacity we were seeing with our legacy system.?

?From a performance and operations perspective, we are very happy with the PureWave gear,? added Boening. ?Our installers are able to convert 10 to 15 customers to the new network each day, and customers are seeing stable, solid performance and service speeds that meet today?s bandwidth hungry applications.?

This leaves 50MHz of often pristine spectrum, ideal for broadband wireless services. Small Business Networking - Getting Better Results from Your Efforts

Networking, whether in person or online, is still one of the most effective ways for lawyers, accountants, and other service based companies to build their business. However, many of these folks are frustrated by their ability to get consistent results from their networking efforts.

A common scenario that I hear when talking to business owners is that they meet people at networking events, they have a nice follow up meeting (coffee, phone call, lunch etc.) but nothing ever happens after that.

One of the challenges is that in order to get referrals, people have to be thinking of us when they meet someone who we can help. In other words we have to be ?top of mind? before the need arises if we want them to remember us when the need does arise.

Achieving Top of Mind Status

In order to achieve ?top of mind? status with someone you recently met, you need to interact with them at a higher frequency than you do once they have gotten to know you. A good rule of thumb to start with is to interact with a new connection 4 times in the first 30 days after you meet them. Here is a sample schedule of what that may look like:

• Week 1 ? Invite them to connect on LinkedIn
• Week 2 ? Share an article or resource
• Week 3 ? Introduce them to someone in your network
• Week 4 ? Invite them to attend a networking event with you

Some of these items may not make sense for your business or circumstances, but you get the idea.

As you go through the process above, you should be evaluating whether or not this? is a person who should remain in your relationship building system. Not everyone will be a good fit for your business and it is important that you have enough time to cultivate the ones who are a good fit.

Staying Top of Mind

Once you have achieved top of mind status, you must continue to cultivate your relationship if you want to remain there. The good news is staying top of mind requires less effort than getting there in the first place. The key is to be consistent and to continue to provide value.

Two of my favorite tactics for maintaining Top of Mind Status are:

1. Newsletter ? consistently reaching out via a newsletter is a great way to stay top of mind with your strategic partners. People often reply to my newsletter with a message that is unrelated to the content of the newsletter. The newsletter reminded them of something they wanted to talk to me about so they just hit ?reply?.

2. Quarterly phone call ? or some other form of personal interaction is also a great way to remain top of mind. Use your CRM system to keep track of your interactions and to schedule your quarterly calls.

Of course, phone calls are only one way to reinforce your relationship through personal interactions. Here are a few other tactics you can use:

• Lunches
• Personal Notes
• Introductions to people in your network
• Articles
• Special Reports
• Commenting on and\or sharing information via social media

Create a systematic approach to achieve top of mind status and remain there and you will start to generate quality referrals on a more consistent basis.

The Telegraph reports on the intersection of prostitution law (it's now legal) and unemployment law (you can lose your benefits if you turn down a job) in Germany:?'If you don't take a job as a prostitute, we can stop your benefits'

"A 25-year-old waitress who turned down a job providing "sexual services'' at a brothel in Berlin faces possible cuts to her unemployment benefit under laws introduced this year.

"Prostitution was legalised in Germany just over two years ago and brothel owners ? who must pay tax and employee health insurance ? were granted access to official databases of jobseekers.

?"The waitress, an unemployed information technology professional, had said that she was willing to work in a bar at night and had worked in a cafe.

?"She received a letter from the job centre telling her that an employer was interested in her "profile'' and that she should ring them. Only on doing so did the woman, who has not been identified for legal reasons, realise that she was calling a brothel.

?"Under Germany's welfare reforms, any woman under 55 who has been out of work for more than a year can be forced to take an available job ? including in the sex industry ? or lose her unemployment benefit. Last month German unemployment rose for the 11th consecutive month to 4.5 million, taking the number out of work to its highest since reunification in 1990.

So we have here a situation in which a formerly repugnant transaction became legal and might, under some circumstances become mandatory (at least for those seeking unemployment benefits). This reminds me of one of the better arguments against legalizing kidney sales and other payments to organ donors: once they were legal, some future Congress might want to make unemployment benefits available only to people who had already utilized their kidney resources, for example?
